Mommy's Trip to the Hospital

Last night as we were finishing up dinner, I started having floaters and other vision issues. I took some Tylenol thinking a headache was coming. A few minutes later, Kyle was trying to talk to me and I couldn't get the words out of my mouth to respond and my vision was pretty much gone.

After a few minutes, my peripheral vision started to return and I could get enough words out to let Brent know I needed to go to the ER.

Luckily, my mom was at our house for dinner and to hang out with Brent went to a board meeting. Brent stayed home with the kids and my mom took me to the ER in Ionia.

Once we got to the ER, a nurse took me back to triage shortly after we got there. I was able to speak normal again and my vision was good when I was talking to her. I had an EKG done and then was sent back to the waiting room until their was a room available.

Once back in the waiting room, I started having issues with my speech and vision again, but my vision never got as bad as it had originally.

When they finally got me back to a room, things started to happen kind of quickly. The nurse started an IV and drew some blood and the doctor was in. Their guess was that I was having some sort of weird migraine, but because I was still having lots of trouble speaking and my blood pressure was very high, they ordered a stroke work up and were treating me as if I was having a stroke.

Techs came and got my quickly to do a CT and chest x-ray. They got a urine sample and did a finger prick to test my sugar.

Then we waited for results. And I was still having a hard time getting my words out for the most part.

Finally, all of the results came back negative, but because I was still having delayed speech at this point, the neurologist thought it was best they continued to monitor me for a stroke until I could have imaging done with contrast. They called an ambulance and transferred me to the main hospital in Lansing.

When I got to Lansing and to my room, I got frustrated as I had to try to explain what was going on because I was still having a really hard time getting my words out.

The resident came and spend a bunch of time checking me all over and talking to me. His gut feeling was the same as everyone else that I was having a really bad migraine, but he really wanted to order a CT and MRI with contrast to rule out a stroke for sure. He also order magnesium for my IV to "help the migraine go away."

At this point, I still didn't have any head pain, just a bit of pressure behind my eyes... and the speech delay.

About 1:00 am I had my CT after an adventure that included getting lost with the nurses in the radiology department.

Around 2:00 am, I was finally settled back into my room and my magnesium had finished. A little while later, I could FINALLY speak normal again!! And I got to sleep in short bit. The nurses had to check my vitals every hour!

I slept on and off until 6:00 or so when they started to get my ready to go to MRI. Around this time, my head started to hurt...

After my MRI I hung out in my room until my mom got here... and then a short while later Brent and the kids got here.

Around lunch time the doctors came in for rounds and said all the test came back normal... meaning NO STROKE!

The official diagnosis is a complex atypical migraine with aura. They explained that these type of migraines not only cause stroke like symptoms, but they also can cause strokes and I am at risk for having a stroke now. Their recommendations to to take magnesium daily and to follow up with a neurologist specialized in headaches.

They also explained that if I started to have vision issues that aren't going away or start to having any issues speaking again, that I need to head to the ER quickly for the determination to be made if I am having a stroke or just another migraine.

Apparently all the concussion I had in high school are a contributing factor...  so be careful and don't get hit in the head!!!

It's now almost dinner time and sounded like the nurse would have my discharge papers soon. I'm exhausted and have a little bit of a headache, but am so thankful that I can SEE and TALK without issue!! And so very thankful to go home and cuddle my kiddos!!

Peyton's Second ER Visit, First Ambulance Ride, and Second Hospital Admission

All week, Peyton has been stuffy and had a cough...

On Thursday, all of a sudden Peyton was choking on mucus and coughing and turned blue...and then stopped breathing... and then started breathing... and then did it all over again...

Once he was breathing semi normal again, I called our pediatricians office and spoke to a nurse. The nurse told me to take Peyton to the ER in Ionia so that he didn't have to ride in the back seat for 45 minutes to Lansing when he was having issues breathing.

I called one of our teenagers to come over and watch the big kids and I took Peyton a few blocks to the hospital.

When I walked into the hospital with Peyton, he was blue again.. and we were taken right back. Once he got stable... we went back to the waiting room until there was a room available. Once there was a room available, we were taken back again and hooked Peyton was hooked back up to the monitors again. The doctor come in pretty quickly and after hearing what happened and examining him Peyton, he decided we were going to be transported to Lansing by ambulance to be admitted.

The doctor called and talked to the doctors in the peds unit in Lansing. That doctor wanted labs and a chest xray done before he was transferred and the ambulance needed to have IV access.

So, we went and got a chest xray... and then when we got back from xray, the nurses tried to get blood and start an IV. The nurse got the IV in on the first try and got the blood that was needed for labs, but then when she flushed the line, the vein blew. They attempted several more times and then decided to take a break... a little while later, the first nurse tried again and finally got an IV in.

Shortly after he had his IV, the doctor came back in and said Peyton's RSV swab came back positive, RSV isn't good, but at least we had an answer as to why the little man was so sick.

A little while later, Lansing called to let us know they finally had a room ready for Peyton.

So then we road in the ambulance to Lansing... it was a long trip. Peyton had to be in his car seat and his car seat was strapped to the stretcher. Peyton was having a hard time being in his car seat and kept having to have oxygen on the way. It made me feel a lot better about riding in the ambulance and not taking him to Lansing myself.

Once we finally go there and got all checked in, Peyton calmed down and started breathing a little easier. It was hooked up to the monitors and checked out by a few doctors....

Throughout the night and all day Friday, Peyton did okay. His had to have oxygen a few times and had lots of snot sucked out of his nose....

Friday night we were sent home with instructions to follow up with our pediatrician and to return to the ER if he had more problems breathing.

RSV is a long lasting virus and will hang out in Peyton's body for a long time...The doctor said he will probably cough for the next six weeks or so...

Peyton's First ER Visit and Hospital Admission

On Monday afternoon/evening, Peyton started to get really fussy. He was acting like is belly hurt and pretty much just cried...and cried...and cried. I figured it was something I ate and didn't think a whole lot of it..

About midnight, he woke up screaming. When I picked him up, I felt really warm. I had Brent get the thermometer while I changed his diaper. His temp was 101.5. I called our pediatrician's office to talk to the on-call doctor... while it's not a crazy high temp, a temp in a baby less than three months old is very concerning.

The on-call doctor quickly called back and told me that I needed to take him to the ER. She said if we could, it probably would be best to go to Lansing, as there is a peds ER at the Sparrow main campus, but she also said it would be okay to go to Ionia if we needed to. I didn't really want to drive all the way to Lansing and knew that I couldn't go into the ER there by my self (it's where Michael was taken...), so I took Peyton to the Sparrow in Ionia.

When we got there, they took Peyton's temp again and it was the same as what I had gotten at home. The doctor came in quickly and checked him all out. He ordered a bunch of blood work, a nasal swab, and a chest x-ray. He explained fevers in new babies are very alarming and treated very seriously and require a large work up to make sure it's nothing serious since he can't say "my head hurts" or likewise.

They quickly worked to draw blood and start an IV. Once his IV was going, we were taken for a chest x-ray. Once tests started to come back negative, the doctor ordered some Tylenol in hopes of bring down Peyton's fever. About 4am, his temp was finally down to 100.1 (100.4 is considered a fever). Once the IV fluids were done, we were discharged with directions to take Peyton to the main campus of Sparrow to the ER if  his fever got back up to 101 again or to follow up with his doctor in the morning. Finally around 5am, we got home and crawled back into bed. (On a side note... I was very impressed with the doctor and the nurses that took care of Peyton. I'm normally nervous taking my kids to the ER or Walk-In Clinic in Ionia, but they did a great job at this visit!)

Tuesday morning when we woke up, Peyton's temp was back up to 100.9. I called our pediatrician's office and took Peyton in at 11:00. Luckily we saw our normal doctor! Peyton screamed pretty much the whole way there and the whole time we were there. His doctor was concerned that he was inconsolable. He wanted me to try to nurse Peyton to see if that would calm him down. He eventually latched on for about 2 minutes and then fell asleep.

Peyton's doctor explained that at this age, Peyton is in a gray area for recommended treatment. Apparently, any baby with a fever under 6 weeks is automatically admitted to the hospital and started on antibiotics. At 6 to 8 weeks, it's a gray area if we just wait and see what happens or admit the baby. His doctor said that he was really on the fence about what to do, so he wanted us to head home and see how he did. He had me make a follow up appointment for Wednesday (the next day) and gave me a lab slip to have more labs done before the appointment. He told me though that if his fever started to go up any more or if he started screaming again, to give him a call.

We headed home and shortly after we left, Peyton started crying again and cried most of the way home. He was a little bit better once we got home, but soon his temp started to climb again and he was very fussy. I called the peds office and then waited for his doctor to call back. When he called, he decided the best option would be to admit Peyton for 48 hours of observation just in case he took a sudden turn for the worse. Right now the hospital isn't doing any direct admits and is wanted patients to be admitted through the ER, but because of our "situation," Peyton's doctor called and got the okay to do a direct admit for him.

About 2pm, Peyton and I headed back to the hospital. When we got there, we were sent to the peds unit and put in room 534... the same room Colby was in a year ago! (I am proud of my self... there were very few tears walking into the hospital and pass the ER...but I am very grateful that we were able to do a direct admit and I didn't have to go into the ER...)

The doctor came in shortly after we were there and asked lots of questions about what was going on with Peyton. It was determined that we needed to have a few more tests ran just to rule stuff out. They did a lumbar puncture to check for meningitis, a few more labs, another nasal swab, and an abdominal ultrasound. They also started him on IV fluids. Luckily, Peyton was seeming to feel a little better. He did still have a fever, but wasn't constantly screaming.

All of his tests kept coming back negative.. which was good, but didn't give us any answers as to what was going on. (His ultrasound did show some dilation in his kidneys, but the urologist determined it was nothing to do with his fever and may just be from all the extra fluids. We were told to follow up with his pediatrician about it and would most likely have another ultrasound in a month or so to double check things.)

By Wednesday morning, Peyton's fever was gone and he was started to act like his normal self again. He was starting to get congested though and his reflux was worse than normal, so he still wasn't "all better." During rounds on Wednesday, the wanted to try to give him some gas drops to help settle his belly and use suction to clean out his nose... both seemed to help. They told us that we still needed to wait until the 48 hour mark on the blood and urine cultures that were done in the ER, but as long as those were good and Peyton's temp stayed normal, that we would be discharged on Thursday morning.

Thursday morning finally came around, and we were discharge. The official guess for the cause of Peyton's fever was an upper respiratory infection.

I was once again impressed with the doctors and nurses at Sparrow. Like any hospital, it has its downfalls, but I was impressed with how much the they all seemed to care and wanted to make sure my baby boy was getting everything that he needed!

He's been good for the most part since we've been home. He still is a little congested, but so are the other three kiddos. As of right now, we are just going to follow up when Peyton has his two month well visit.

Daddy brought the big kids to come visit a couple times and they enjoyed playing with the big toys in the hallways and hanging out in Peyton's crib and watching TV. Grandma Franks, Aunt Kara, and Unlce Ian all came to visit too.

And... we didn't do Peyton's seven week block pictures... because we were in the hospital on Wednesday.. opps!

Peyton's Birth Story

After having my membranes stripped at my appointment on Tuesday, I started having contractions about an hour later. Around 4:00 we all went to Menards to walk because my hips were hurting the the contractions and walking would help. When we got home around 5:30, my contractions were about 3 minutes apart and I started to bleeding. We got the kiddos ready for bed and then Brent and I played Wii Tennis for a while. My contractions were starting to get stronger, but not really any closer together. Around 10, the contractions slowed down to 10 minutes apart, so we went to bed thinking it wasn't going to happen.

I then woke up about 11 with strong contractions about 3 minutes apart and lots more blood. The contractions and bleeding continued about about 1:00am I decided we needed to go to the hospital. We got the rest of the last minute stuff packed and loaded the kiddos up in the van. My parents met us at the hospital around 2:30 and took the kids back to their house.

Once in triage, I was hooked up to the monitors for an hour. After an hour, my cervix was still at 2cm (which is what it had been at my appointment on Tuesday), but they were concerned because Peyton's heart rate was dropping with each contraction and I was bleeding lots. So they decided to do an ultrasound to check on his fluid levels. His fluid was really low, so we were told that we were staying and they were going to try to help get things moving.

We were taken from triage to OB Special Care because there were all the labor and delivery rooms were full. Once there, they got me all hooked up to the monitors again and gave me cervidil, a little tiny pill, in hopes that it would help "ripen" my cervix so that my contractions would make it open more on its own. I was given the pill at 7am and the plan was for them monitor me for two hours and then let me get up and move around until 11, then they would check my cervix again and see where to go from there.

Very shortly after I took the pill, my contractions got stronger. By 9:30 I was in lots of pain and was having a hard time laying still. Because I was moving in bed more than I should have, they were having a hard time getting the stuff they needed on the monitors from Peyton, so I had to stay on the monitors for a bit longer. At 10:30, they took the monitors off, the nurse told me to order some food, and gave me permission to take a shower, thinking it might help with some of the pain.

When I got out of bed, I thought my water broke because there was a gush of fluid. But it was just blood. I took a shower, and while it helped a little bit, my contractions just got stronger and stronger. After my shower, I told the nurse that I was ready for my epidural. I had to be transferred to labor and delivery before I could have the epidural, so they checked my cervix (I was now at 3cm) and put in the transfer order. We had to wait for a room to be cleaned, so while we waited they gave me a little bit of morphine to help take the edge off the contractions. I didn't really help, just made me kind of loopy and more sleepy. I was positive for group b strep, so they also started my antibiotics at this point.

Finally around 11:45 they took me over to labor and delivery and got me all hooked up to everything over there. Shortly after we got there, anesthesia came in and I had my epidural by 12:00 and was very comfortable. I was checked at was at 8cm.

A little before 1:00, Brent went to get something to eat. While he was gone, I started gushing blood. When they check my cervix, I was complete, but my water was still intact. They were hoping to keep my water from breaking until 2:30, when my first round of antibiotics would be done. They did get everything all set up and ready to go for delivery and told the doctor know what was going on. They also told me to keep pushing my epidural button so I would have any urges to push.

Brent was back quickly with his lunch and ate fast! The doctor came in a few minutes before two and just hung out and helped finishing getting everything ready. At 2:15 she checked how much blood I was loosing and touched my bag of water...and her touch broke my water. So, we started pushing.

It was way harder pushing this time than the last two because I couldn't feel anything. It took about 15 minutes of pushing (the big kids all took about 3 pushes each to come out), and we had a baby!

Then put Peyton on my chest right away and started to check him out. He was squeaking, peeing and pooping! And he was nursing just minutes after they his mouth and nose all sucked out.

When they delivered my placenta, they confirmed I had a placenta abruption and my placenta was falling apart. The abruption was also confirmed by pathology.

After Peyton was done nursing, they checked him all out and got him cleaned up a bit more. He weighed in at 6 lbs 14.6 oz, 20 inches long, and a head circumference of 12.5 inches. He looked great and his heart sounded great!

It took a while for my epidural to wear off because I had so much of it right at the end, but once I could feel my legs and such again, I got to get out of bed and get cleaned up and transferred to the Mother Baby unit.

Because I only got (almost) one complete dose of antibiotics for the group b strep, we had to stay about 48 hours just to monitor Peyton for signs of infection. But the little guy has done great. He's eat, sleeping, and pooping like a champ! My milk came in while he was nursing right after delivery, so he's eating a little less often than most newborns, but he's eating plenty when he does eat and hasn't had any issues latching on. He does like to be held up for a bit after he eats though. If we lay him down right after he nurses he gets the burpy hiccups and isn't too happy.

The also had an EKG just to check things out, even though his head sounds great. The EKG showed that every few beats originate from the lower part of his heart instead of the upper part. The pediatrician said it normally isn't a big deal, but they are going to have us see the cardiologist for an echo and to make sure everything is okay. We need to call on Monday to get an appointment sometime in the next week or two.

A Long Week

On Tuesday, I had my weekly OB check up. It was rough to start with because my doctor was running way late... Which is weird because she's normally right on time.
When I was finally taken back, I stepped on the scale on the way...and I was down two pounds from the pervious week.
Then I waited a while in the room and the doctor finally came in. My belly measured okay. Then she listened to his heart and right away I knew something wasn't right from the way it sounded. Her expression quickly changed to one of concern. She said what we were hearing was a heart block and she was referring me to see the high risk OB for a fetal echo.

It's been a worrisome week waiting for the high risk doctor to call so we can figure out what's going on with Peyton's heart. We still don't have an appointment, but hopefully we will before I go into labor.

Thursday I had contractions on and off most of the day...and just as I was thinking we probably should head to the hospital, they stopped!

This morning I woke up about 2am puking and couldn't stop; nothing would stay in my belly. About 10:30 I finally gave up and called the doctor. The on call doctor suggested giving it a little long and trying water again, and if that didn't work, to head to labor and delivery for iv fluids. So I drank some water...and it stayed down for about ten minutes.

So I took a trip to the hospital and laid in a bed hooked up to monitors and an iv. After two bags of fluids and some zofran in my iv, I finally didn't feel like puking! So I drank some apple juice and once we know I wasn't going to throw up, I was discharged and sent home!

On the plus side though, Peyton was on the monitor for a while when I got here and his heart sounds great today....perfectly normal! No weird rhythm and no skipping beats! Was told though it's still a good idea to see the high risk for the fetal echo though just to be safe.

Brent is at winter camp this weekend with the teens. So we are hoping that Peyton stays put until Monday so Brent can stay and enjoy camp... and if he's still in on Tuesday, then my doctor will strip my membranes at my appointment on Tuesday and we'll see what happens. One way or another though this little boy is coming out sometime in the next two weeks!

Colby's Week of Doctors

On Wednesday Colby had his surgery to put tubes in his ears.

We had to be at the hospital at 7:45, so we got the kiddos out of bed at 6:00 and put them in the car. We dropped Kyle and Emily off at Grandma and Grandpa's house about 7:00 and headed up to Sparrow. We got all checked in and ready to go...and then we waited...and waited... Colby didn't seem to mind too much. He was enjoying his silly hat and having all of mommy and daddy's attention.

About 9:30 Brent and Colby went to the OR and a few minutes later Brent joined my in the waiting room. About 15 minutes later, the doctor came and told us that everything went great. There was no sign of a current infection, but he did drain a little fluid out of each ear before he stuck the tubes in.

As soon as the doctor was done talking to us, someone was waiting to take us back to recovery to see Colby. He wasn't a very happy camper when we got there, but after a few cuddles, he started nursing and was content. Colby and I rode back up to the Peds unit in a wheel chair while he was nursing. They took his vitals when we got there and told us as soon as he was done nursing, we could get him dressed and be on our way. He nursed for a bit and then drank some water and by 10:30 we were in the van headed to eat lunch and then to get the big crazies.

He took a short nap in the van on the way home and was a little crabby the rest of the day, but over all was fine. He didn't want to go to bed at night, so he got a few extra cuddles, but once he fell asleep, he slept all night! On Thursday, he was back to his normally happy and goofy self and he hasn't complained once about his ears hurting.

This morning Colby had a follow up appointment with the allergist. When we were there over the summer, she wanted us to slowly and carefully try to introduce the foods he had been reacting to after we got the gluten out of his system. He has tolerated everything fine except for peanuts, so we've still been avoid those and tree nuts.

He tested higher than before for peanuts and tree nuts and all of his environmental allergies were the same or higher. So, we are going to keep avoiding what we have been, keep carrying his epi pen and Benadryl, and keep doing our best to keep the little dude safe. She said come spring he will probably need to start talking singular again, but we will wait for him to start to have allergy symptoms before we start it.

Two Boys = Two ER Visits

For those of you that don't know, we are currently in Chicago on a missions trip with our teens. The teens are working with Vision for Youth and Inner City Impact doing a soccer camp. The kiddos and I are staying with Brent's sister Alyssa and her family and spending part of our days with Daddy and the teens.

Sunday the teens were all at Alyssa and Shane's house helping with a move and as they were getting ready to leave on Sunday night, Colby fell and smacked his mouth on a shelf. He screamed and was bleeding and missing part of his tooth. We called our pediatrician's office and after talking to the on-call physician, decided Colby needed to go to the ER to get check out. Kyle and Emily stayed with Alyssa and Shane while Colby and I went to the hospital. They checked him all out at the hospital. He has four teeth... he broke both of the top two.... The ER doctor said he was fine to wait until we got home to go to the dentist, but will probably need root canals and crowns on both teeth!

Today Alyssa and Harper (her 3 month old) joined the kids and I when we went to hang out with the teens. The kids were sitting on the bleachers and Alyssa and I kept telling Emily and Colby to sit down because they were climbing all over. At one point, Emily got her arm stuck and I had to get her some ice. Kyle was sitting still on the bottom bench (about a foot off the ground) and somehow fell. I hopped right up to him expecting him to start screaming but be fine. As soon as I saw his arm, I knew it was broken and most likely badly broken.

Brent called 911 and Kyle screamed the whole time we waited for the ambulance to get there. As soon as we got into the ambulance, he calmed down and didn't cry again until they set his arm.

Luckily Alyssa was there and took care of Emily and Colby. She, along with one of our teens (Gabby), got the kids into the van and met us at the hospital.

I thought Kyle would be excited about the ambulance right, but at the time he didn't really seem to care. Once we got to the hospital, we got checked in and not to long after that a PA saw Kyle in triage and said the same thing as the EMT's... it's was broken, but the real question was how bad. Once Gabby was inside with Kyle and I, she went with Kyle to get his x-rays (since Mommy couldn't stay with him because of the baby in my belly). Gabby and the tech both said he did really good while he was getting his x-rays.

A little while later the doctor same and showed us the x-ray. He broke both bones in his right forearm. Normally when little kids break bones they just kind of bend them... but Kyle completely broke both bones.

The plan was to sedate him so they could set the bones. They got him all ready with his IV and hooked up to all the monitors and stuff.. and then they gave him the meds and nothing happened. After three doses, he was a little silly, but still WIDE awake. They pharmacist came in, and her and the doctor were both very confused why Kyle was still awake. They tried a different drug and within seconds he was asleep. They set his arm and put a temporary cast on it and then we had to wait for him to wake up. It took a little longer than expected, but eventually he woke up. He was kind of crabby, but that was to be expected. After he went pee, ate some crackers, and drank some juice, he were finally able to be discharged.

Alyssa was AMAZING and kept Harper, Emily, and Colby content all afternoon between the car and ER waiting room! She was waiting for us when we came out... and we got some food and took Gabby back to the teens and headed home!

On the way home, it was funny listening to Kyle tell Emily all about riding in the ambulance, getting x-rays taken, and showing off his cast! When I put him to bed, he was really excited to go show the teenagers tomorrow!

So, next week when we get home, Colby will get to see the dentist and Kyle will get to see an orthopedic for his BLUE cast!

Colby's Endoscopy

Colby had his endoscopy today. It was kind of a long morning... he wasn't allowed any solids after mid night and had to stop nursing at 9:30.

He screamed most of the 45 minute drive to the hospital, but then was okay once we got there. He played iPad with Grandpa while we waited. We kind of got excited when they told us one of the people before us was a no show, meaning we should get to go back early.... but he ended up having his procedure right at time... at 3:30.

While we were in holding, Colby fell asleep from some of the oral meds. When it was time, I carried him into the OR and held him while they got him hooked up to the heart monitors and such. He woke up a little when I laid him down on the table, but when right back to sleep. He woke up once the gas mask was put on his face and was not happy about that. But after screaming for 30 seconds or so, he was out. I gave him a kiss and walked out.

About a half hour later, Colby's doctor came into the waiting room to talk to us. He said that everything looked great. There were no signs of ulcers or inflammation anywhere in his GI tract! This means most likely no celiac's disease! In about a week, we should have back all of the results from the biopsies and allergy panels to know for sure about the celiac's disease and should have some answers about the EOE.

The doctor told us that I should be paged to go back to recovery in about 10 minutes... a half hour later, I still hadn't heard anything and started to get nervous. It was about 45 minutes after we talked to the doctor, that I finally got to go back to recovery. Apparently, they gave Colby a large dose of benadryl to help prevent any possible allergic reactions to the anesthesia and and that's why it took him so long to wake up.

Once we were able, he nursed... and nursed... and nursed. Then ate some crackers and drank some apple juice. Then he was discharged and on our way!

He's been a little silly, but mostly just wanted to eat and sleep since we've been home. Hopefully he'll be a good sleeper tonight and be back to normal tomorrow!

Colby's Hospital Visits

Last Wednesday morning Colby started throwing up while he was nursing first thing in the morning. I didn't think much of it because sometimes he just throws up. We went about our morning and took an adventure to the library and Meijer. After lunch, while nursing, Colby threw up again. And he kept throwing up... and throwing up... and throwing up... and he wasn't having any wet diapers. After dinner, I called and talked to the on-call doctor and he told me to try pedialyte and if he couldn't keep that down to take him to the ER.

After more throwing up, Colby and I headed to the ER once Brent got home from church. After a long wait, we finally saw the doctor. They gave Colby zofran and more pedialyte. He managed to keep down the pedialyte with the help of the zofran, but had an allergic reaction to something and was covered in hives, so he was also given benadryl. After his hives started to go away, they were ready to discharge him since he hadn't thrown up any more. I asked if he should have IV fluids because he still hadn't had a wet diaper, and they told me no, that he was fine, and sent us home.

We had more throwing up shortly after we got home.

Thursday he finally had a damp diaper, but still hasn't keeping anything down besides little bits of breastmilk. I talked to a nurse at our peds office in the afternoon, and she said to just keep trying to breastfeed him as he could tolerate it. After more throwing up and no more wet diapers, I called in the evening and talked to the on call doctor again. He told me to give his belly a little while to rest, and then to try to get him to sip pedialyte slowly and if he could keep that down, to try to nurse him again. If he was still throwing up, we needed to take him back to the ER. After a few hours, he seemed to has a settled belly and went to sleep after nursing a bit.

Friday morning about 2am, Emily woke up screaming. She needed to throw up. And a little bit later, she needed to throw up some more. And then Colby was wake and wanted to eat... and then he threw up. Once the doctor's office opened, I called and made appointments for both kiddos for that afternoon. We had a long morning with lots of puke! Luckily, Emily is good about throwing up in the bucket, so I only had to worry about cleaning up after Colby.

By the time we got to the doctor, both of their belly's seemed to have settled down. They gave us Gerber Replenish (a kid version of Gatorade) for Emily and thought she was on the mend. They were a little more worried about Colby because he hadn't kept a whole lot down for three days and had only had three kind of wet diapers and one diaper of diarrhea. They wanted me to take him to have blood word done and bring him back to the office for another check in the morning. The doctor told me that Colby most likely would be admitted to the hospital when we came back on Saturday unless there was a huge improvement.

We went to the hospital after the doctor's office to have blood work done. They had such a hard time getting his vein. The tech told me that he was extremely dehydrated based on how hard his blood drawl was. The poor kid just sat there as the tech poked around his arm for a bit to get blood. :(

Friday night there was more puke.

Saturday morning Colby and I headed to the doctor's office. They examined him and the doctor (a different one than he saw on Friday) thought that he didn't look dehydrated, but his blood work showed that he was, so she wanted to try to get a urine sample before deciding to admit him or send us home. The nurse cathed Colby and tried for a LONG time to get a urine sample, but had no luck. The doctor same in and said "You boy looks a whole lot healthier than he is" and sent us to the hospital to be admitted.

So off to the hospital we went. We got Colby all check in and Grandma Franks came to hang out with us. He had his own room and was put in isolation. This meant that he wasn't allowed to leave his room and all of the doctors and nurses that came in had to wear a gown, gloves, and a mask. He finally got his IV a little after noon, but they couldn't get blood when they put it in, so he had to get poked again. The first try also didn't work, so the poor kiddo got poked a third time! After lots of fluids, he finally seemed to be feeling a little better and peed!

Around dinner time, Ian (my sister's boyfriend) was handing out with Colby and I. I handed Colby to Ian to cuddle while I ate my dinner, and Colby decided to throw up. All over himself and a little on the floor. Luckily, Ian didn't get any on him. Unluckily, Colby got it all over himself and his with his IV in it. Because it was covered in puke, they had to change the board on his arm. While cutting the tape to clean it all up, the nurse cut his IV line. So it was a HUGE deal to change it and took a long time. Colby was not a happy camper. A while while later, Grandma came back to get all the stuff Colby threw up on to wash it... and Colby thanked Grandma by throwing up on her!

A little while later, Grandma and Ian left. We hung out for a bit and then Kara showed up after she was done with work. Kara helped get Colby to sleep for a little bit. Shortly after Kara left, Colby woke up and screamed... and screamed... and screamed...We had a rough night.

Sunday was another long day. In the morning, Colby seemed to be doing better, so his IV fluids were stopped and I was told to feed him some solids. Grandma Franks, Kara, and Ian hung out with us most of the morning and Colby was doing okay. Until everyone left, and he felt the need to throw up again! He also wasn't having wet diapers again. The doctor's decided to do an ultrasounds to make sure his bowels weren't telescoping, but that came back normal.

Sunday evening, Grandma and Grandpa Franks and Kara came back to visit. Daddy, Kyle, and Emily also came for a short visit after youth group. The kiddos all seemed very happy to see each other.

They wanted to give him a few more hours to nurse and have a wet diaper, but early Monday morning his IV fluids were started again because he wasn't peeing.

Monday morning, I started not feel good and throwing up. It only last a few hours, but I was pretty miserable during those few hours. I'm not sure what my problem was. The thoughts were I may had gotten some dairy by accident or maybe it was just eating all the processed hospital foods. But either by, after a few hours, I was back to normal.

During morning rounds, the doctors decided that he might be constipated, so they decided to do an x-ray to check that out. While we were waiting to go to x-ray, Grandpa Eubank came to visit.

Colby enjoyed leaving his room to go get his x-ray. While we were waiting in the holding already, he was walking around in circles pushing his IV pole. It was pretty cute! He was not very happy when we had to go back to his room after his x-rays were done.

The x-rays showed that Colby was extremely constipated. The doctor's ordered an enema and while we were waiting for the nurse, Colby decided he was going to poop on his own. He pushed, and pushed, and pushed and finally got a little bit out. Poor little dude still had to get his enema. He did not lot it, but seemed to feel better after some of the poop was cleared out. They also took his IV out. We also go to go for a walk... as long as I had him in my wrap. So I wrapped him up and we did about six laps. He was very relaxed and loved being out of his room for a while. Grandma Franks came back and we went back to his room and tried to get him to eat and drink. He ate lots of crackers and drank almost a whole sippy cup of water. He kept every down and peed and was acting like himself again! So we were discharged to go home!! Daddy, Kyle, and Emily came to get us.

When we left and took Colby to the van, he was very excited. It was kind of funny. We had a good night. Once we got home, Colby nursed and went to sleep and slept all night!

Tuesday was a rough day. All three kiddos wanted 100% of my attention all day long. Colby wasn't interested in much food, but wanted to nurse most of the day. At lunch, he ate a little too much and threw up, but other than that seemed okay. He had lots of wet diapers.

Today, everything seemed to be getting back to our normal routine. Colby nursed when when he woke up, after lunch, and at bedtime. He has been eating normal and keeping everything down. He hasn't been pooping though and his belly seems to be bothering him. He was sent home with a stool softener, but they normally take a few days to work, so hopefully tomorrow we'll have a poopy diaper or two.

This afternoon a nurse from our peds office called to check on Colby. She has been assigned to be his case manager and wanted to touch base with me before starting some referrals. Colby's doctor thinks there might be a connection between Colby's constipation/throwing up and his allergies. We have a follow up appointment on Friday and sounds like Colby is going to be referred to see a GI specialist and a dietitian. She also gave us some food to try to help Colby poop and foods to avoid. If he doesn't poop by tomorrow afternoon, I'm supposed to call her back and she'll get us in tomorrow instead of Friday.

Please continue to pray for Colby as we continue to get everything all figured out. The poor kid's list of foods that cause reactions keep growing and his little body seems to be having all sorts of issues. And please pray for wisdom as we feed him (and as I eat) and take care of him. Hopefully we can get everything all sorted out soon!

A Couple Crazy Days!

I just want to start out by saying Thank You to everyone who has prayed for us and had words of encouragement over the past couple days!

It kind of all started Wednesday night... When we got home from church, we got Emily and Kyle in bed. I went to feed Colby and he refused to eat; he just screamed! After an hour and a half or so of screaming, he finally ate, but only for a few minutes. I thought something was up because he normally eats for at least an hour before bed, but he stayed asleep when I laid him down, so I just kind of went with it.

I figured Colby would be up several times during the night, but he only woke up at 3am and ate for 20 minutes.

Around 5am, Brent woke me up to let me know he was taking the van to work because his car wouldn't start. Throughout the morning, we (Mike) came to the conclusion that it was the battery.

Around 8am, Colby woke up when Kyle and Emily got out of bed and his diaper was barely wet. I tried feeding him and he refused both breast and solids. For the next two hours, I tried every fifteen minutes or so to get him to eat and he kept refusing. He pretty much just screamed for the whole two hours... at one point, I got him to sleep in my wrap for a few minutes.

Around 10am I called the doctor and they had either an appointment at noon or at 5:30. I figured it would be easiest to do the later in the day one, since Brent had to come home from work (an hour away in Lansing) for me to be able to take him to the doctor.

Colby pretty much screamed all day and refused to eat. He also was able to wear the same diaper all day... because he wasn't peeing.

Brent got home around 4pm and we went to Lansing. We stopped at Mike's work to pick up a new battery for Brent's car and then headed to the doctor's office.

A medical student first checked Colby out and said he seemed fine. When the doctor came in, she was checking in out and by the time I was done sharing the last time he had a wet diaper or ate, she decided he was being admitted to the hospital. He was "moderately or extremely dehydrated." She wasn't sure what else was going on, but said they would do blood work at the hospital and check him all out to figure out why he wasn't eating.

So, to the hospital we went. Brent dropped Colby and I off at the hospital and we started the admission process.

Brent needed to go back to Ionia to get the battery home so that it could be installed in his car by a friend and also to get stuff that Colby and I needed for the night. We decided that it would be easiest that Brent, Kyle, and Emily spend the night at my parents' house in Williamston and my mom agreed to watch the kiddos on Friday so that Brent could go to work. So, Brent met Mike and switched cars with him. Kyle and Emily went home with Grandpa so they could eat dinner and Brent headed to Ionia with Mike's car.

Once back in Ionia, Brent got stuff for everyone for the night and our friend showed up to install the new battery in Brent's car.Turns out we got the wrong size battery... just to add to the excitement! So, the battery went back to Mike and he traded it for the right size and will install it on Sunday when they (Grandma and Grandpa) are babysitting during youth group.

At the hospital, we got to Colby's room quickly, but then it seemed slow from there. The nurse got all his vitals and such and I ordered my dinner (Yay for breastfeeding moms getting free meals while baby is in the hospital!! Specially after I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast because of a screaming baby!). Once Colby was "settled" in his room, we waited and waited for the doctor to come in. Our pedi had ordered IV fluids when she sent over the orders to have him admitted, but we had to wait for the hospital pedi to see him to order blood work before they would start the IV so that Colby would only have to be poked once.

Finally, just as my food good to the room, the doctor came in and asked all sorts of questions and checked him out. He was in agreement that Colby was dehydrated, but had no idea why he wouldn't eat. He ordered a bunch of blood work and said that hopefully we would have some answers once we got the results back.

After the doctor left, I gobbled down my food. I had a banana. I took one bite of it and Colby kept reaching for it (he was on my lap while I was eating). So I decided to see if he would eat some... he ate the whole banana, except for the bit I took. I got excited thinking he might nurse too, but he still refused.

Shorty after I ate, they were ready to do his IV. Poor little guy put up such a fight, it took me plus two nurses to hold him still so the nurse could take his blood and start his IV.

After his fluids were started, he cuddled with me for a bit and then decided to start screaming again. Even though he didn't have a fever, the nurse suggested trying to motrin (Tylenol make him throw up). After checking with the doctor, she gave it to him and he sucked it right down. She also gave him a sippy cup of water that he seemed to enjoy. A little while late (almost mid night), he was acting like he wanted to eat, so I tried.. and he ate for an hour!! And then slept in his "cage" for about two hours!

Around 3am, he woke up and was fussy. I checked his diaper and he finally had a wet diaper! He didn't want to eat anymore, just wanted to cuddle. I'd get him to fall asleep and would lay him in his cage and he would start screaming. So, for the rest of the "night" we hung out in mommy's chair and slept on and off.

Around 7am, Colby decided he wanted to eat... and ate for almost two hours! When he was done eating, we both took a two hour nap (with him laying on my chest in the chair). And then he ate some more!

The doctors came back for their morning rounds and decided that we could start the discharge process. Colby's bloodwork came back mostly normal and his ears and throat and everything else looked okay, so they weren't exactly sure what the issue was. The "head doctor" explained that when babies have colds between six and eight months they some times have issues eating because this is the time period when they change from nose breathers to mouth breathers and congestion can mess with that. So this was his best guess as to why he was refusing to eat (Colby has had a cold for a little over a week). He also said that even though his ears and throat looked okay, they could still be hurting him and causing the pain he's been in.

Grandma and Kyle and Emily came to pick us up. I think all three kiddos were excited to be back together again! We headed back to Grandma and Grandpa's house for lunch and to wait for daddy to get done working so we could head home.

We got home about 3:30 and did dinner at 5:00 and Kyle and Emily were in bed around 6:00! Colby ate for a crazy long time and then slept until 8am... which meant Mommy got lots of sleep too!

A Busy Day: Snow, Two Doctors Appointments, Dinner with Friends, Hospital Trip

Yesterday, Kyle and I both had doctors appointments in Lansing, so we headed to Lansing bright and early with Brent. We dropped Brent off at work and then headed to Grandma and Grandpa Franks' house.

We played for a while and looked at the snow outside.

We were cheesers when Grandpa took lots of pictures!

Great Grandma Johnson came over for a little while. We played and we opened our presents from her!

Then we went outside to play in the snow! Emily HATED the snow! Kyle LOVED the snow!

Emily would only stand in the store for a couple minutes and then wanted to be picked up. She hung out with Mommy most of the time we were outside. She was afraid of Grandpa and Kyle because she thought they were going to get snow on her.

Kyle ventured off and played in the snow. He sat in it and rolled in it and played with it. He even played with snow balls!

After lunch, I headed to my OB's office for my 34 week prenatal visit. Colby's heart rate was 147 bpm. I lost two pounds in the past two weeks, but my belly grew, so there wasn't much of a concern. I passed a kidney stone on Sunday, and it appeared that all was better from that. Everything checked out all good!

Later in the afternoon, Kyle had his appointment for his echo. There was some emergency at the office, we they were 45 minutes late taking him back for his test. Grandma and Grandpa were with us, and both kiddos did great playing with all the toys in the waiting room and not getting impatient! Once we finally got back, Kyle did great. His was a little squirmy when he got tickled, but for the most part laid still and the tech was able to get all the pictures and measurements he needed of Kyle's heart. We should get a cal next week with the results.

We then met Tommy, Allie, and Parker for dinner at Five Guys! Emily was crazy about Parker. As soon as she saw him, she knew who he was and wanted to play with him. It was nice to be able to hang out with them for a little bit... we used to hang out often and haven't very much since we moved to Ionia.

By the time we left Five Guys, neither Brent nor I felt very good. I drove half way home and had to stop to throw up... then Brent drove the rest of the way home. Once we got home, we both were feeling pretty miserable. We got the kids to bed, and I called the on call doctor at my OB's office because pretty much everything I had eaten all day had been puked up at that point. The doctor told me I needed to go to the hospital. Brent stayed home with the kids to sleep so that he would hopefully feel better, and I drove to the hospital and my parents met me there. After waiting forever, I finally got put in a room and they started an IV to treat me for dehydration and hooked me up to monitors to make sure all was well with Colby. After LOTS of fluids and some anti-nausea drugs in my IV, I was finally starting to feel better. The doctor was pretty sure that I (and Brent) had food poisoning. There is some bug going around, but neither of us had a fever, so she didn't think it was that. Finally around 6:00am this morning, I was discharged and headed back to my parents house to sleep for a while.

I am exhausted, but am feeling better. Brent is still not feeling very well... hopefully soon we will both be back to normal. And hopefully the doctor was right that it was food poisoning and Emily and Kyle don't get sick too!

What A Long Week!

It's been one of those week that feels never ending....

Tuesday morning Brent started to get a headache, but figured it was from not having any caffeine, so he drank some pop hoping it would just go away. It started to get worse as the day went on. Tuesday night, Brent hardly slept (which means I also hardly slept) because he was in so much pain. Wednesday morning, I canceled my physical therapy and the babies and I took Brent to the medical aid unit (if you know Brent, you know it's REALLY bad when he actually wants to go to the doctor). They didn't really give us much of an explanation for his headache, but gave him a shot of pain meds and told us that when the meds wore off, if he head still hurt to go to the ER.
Brent pretty much slept all day on Tuesday from the pain meds. Around 4:30, they finally wore off and Brent's headache was back and worse than before. I called our friend April to see if she could come stay with Emily and Kyle while I took Brent to the ER.
The ER wasn't much fun.... but we didn't have to wait too long considering it was the ER. Once we got there and got him all checked in and stuff, it would only about an hour before he Brent was put in a room. When they doctor finally saw him, she was kind of clueless as to what might be causing the headache. He wasn't really having classic migraine symptoms, but that was their best guess. They gave him some migraine meds through his IV, but they didn't really help a whole lot, so they gave him some other pain meds. They were talking about doing a spinal tap to make sure that he didn't have a bleed or meningitis, but then decided against it because the pain meds seemed to be working. After he was able to keep down some crackers and ginger ale, they sent him home with an Rx for migraine meds and told him to follow up with his PCP the next day.
We got home around 11:30pm and Brent went right to bed. I washed bottles and diapers and pumped, and then went to bed. Around 3:00am, Brent woke up and his headache was back. He tried to take a bath to see if that would help and I looked online to find a 24 hours pharmacy... but there isn't one close to us and the roads were really bad. Also around this time , Kyle and Emily decided they were hungry... then after they ate their bottles, Kyle decided that he wanted his mommy... and would not stop crying if I put him down. So I sat in my chair and rocked with Kyle for about an hour and once I thought it was sound asleep, tried to lay him back down in his crib. But as soon as I let go of him, he woke up and started screaming. So I brought Kyle into bed with us and we all slept on and off until about 6:00, when Emily woke up. The babies and I played for a while, while Brent tired to sleep. A little before 8:00am I went to the pharmacy to get Brent's Rx filed. When I got home, he took his me and went back to bed.
Brent had an appointment at 2:15 with his PCP. Our friend April came back over to watch Kyle and Emily, so we didn't have to take them with us. Brent's PCP was also kind of clueless as to what was causing the headache. He said to keep taking the Rx that the ER doctor gave him and ordered a CT of his head. Our insurance requires a prior auth for the CT, so it is scheduled for Tuesday so that the prior auth can be done. (The ER doctor should have really done a CT so that we wouldn't have had to wait for a prior auth because if it's done through the ER, one isn't needed.)
We got home shortly after the babies woke up and they pretty much clung to me for the rest of the day until they went to bed.
Brent had his Skype interview Thursday night with the church in Ann Arbor. The interview went really well! After his interview, we washed bottles and I pumped early and we went to bed early... or at least tried too. I was so tired, I had trouble falling asleep. It around about 11:30 before I actually fell asleep, and then around 2:30, Kyle woke up screaming. He wasn't hungry, he just wanted to cuddle. I sat and rocked him for about an hour and he finally was sleeping soundly enough that I was able to lay him back in his crib. It was also 4, but the time I was able to fall back asleep. Then at 5:00, Emily woke up and was hungry. So I pumped, fed the babies and then they both went back to sleep. Around 6:00, I went back to sleep, but had to wake up at 7:00 for physical therapy. Brent said that he and the babies woke up around 8:15.
They took a good morning nap yesterday, but did not take an afternoon nap. Luckily, when Brent got home from work he was feeling okay enough that he could play with Kyle and Emily while I took a short nap before Kyle's physical therapy. I took both babies with me to Kyle's appointment so that Brent could take a nap before having to work again last night.
Last night at dinner Kyle and Emily were little piggies and ate a ton. Then when they went to bed, they both drank their whole bottles that I put an extra ounce in. I was very excited that they ate so much and hoped that meant they would sleep through the night. I ate dinner, washed diapers and bottles, finished folding laundry and putting it all away, pumped, and then climbed into bed. As soon as I feel asleep, Kyle and Emily both started screaming. I made them bottles and Emily sucked hers right down and Kyle wouldn't take his. They were still crying and both just wanted to be picked up. I ended up bring them to bed with me after they cried for about a half an hour. They were both almost asleep, then Brent called to say he was on his way and that woke them both back up. When Brent got home, he got Kyle to drink his bottle and we put the babies to bed. Brent took another bath to see if it would help his headache, and shortly after he got out of his bath, both of the babies were crying again. They came to bed with us for a bit, but wouldn't lay down. Finally around midnight I got more milk for them and they finally went to sleep. They both woke up at 6am this morning and have been awake every since. They are currently in their cribs and staying there until lunchtime (noon) or if they fall asleep, I'll let them sleep until they wake up!

So... please pray for us. Brent's headache still hasn't gone away. It's tolerable now with the medication, but he still isn't feeling up to par and isn't sleeping great. I woke up this morning with a headache and am exhausted. I'm pretty sure my headache is just from the messed up schedule we've had this week and from being so tried.
Also, please pray with us about the church in Ann Arbor. The senior pastor called Brent yesterday and told them they are interested in pursuing him further. The next steps involve a theology discussion, called Brent's references, and a visit. We are praying about it for a couple days, and then we'll go from there.
We still haven't heard back from the church in Ohio yet, but are also still praying about that ministry as well.

Mommy Broke Her Back

Sunday afternoon I was bringing Kyle downstairs after his nap... And I slipped on the stairs! I protected Kyle and took the brunt of the fall on the middle of my back.  Brent grabbed Kyle (who is fine) and called 911 while I tried my best to stay still.
The ambulance got there and the EMT's put a neck brace on me and loaded me up on the back board. They took me to hospital and then I laided and staired at the ceiling for a little bit. Eventually, doctors and nurses took me off the back board and I got sent for a CT.
The CT showed a fracture in my T4 vertabra. This meant they had to send me to the trama center at another hospital, so they loaded me up and I went for another ambulance ride.
Once at Christiana, we waited in the ED for a long time. I eventally saw the trama doctors. They admitted me and ordered an MRI. I got to my room about midnight, and had my MRI around 3am.
I had to lay flat on my back with the neck brace on and wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything until they got the MRI results back to know if I needed to have surgery or not. I also had to attempt to pump while laying flat on my back... let's just say that got a little messy - but with the nurses' help, we made it work. :)
A little after noon, the nurse said the neurosurgeon read the MRI results and they finally let me drink and moved my bed so I could sit up a little bit! We knew this was a good sign that I wasn't going to need surgery!
Around 4pm the neurosurgeon finally came in. He said no surgery! He also informed me that I have not one, but two fractures (T3 & T4). He said my neck was okay, so he took the brace off my neck. He helped me sit up and checked me all out. He told me I was allowed to get up out of bed and could move around a little bit. He also ordered a brace for me. He told me that if I had to break my back, I broke it in the best place with the best type of fracture.
I spent one more night in the hospital and am now at home! The only restriction is "if it hurts, don't do it." But really.. that means not bending and twisting or picking up anything heavy. He told me Kyle was probably the heaviest thing that I was going to want to pick up. I am pretty sore still and moving carefully. I haven't picked up the babies yet, but have cuddled with them in my chair and sat on the floor and played with them. I'm very happy to be home with my babies again... I missed them very much!

My mom and Michael (step-dad) are here right now and are staying through the weekend. Next week Brent's mom is coming out (which was already planned) and then the following week Kara is coming out to help. And the week after that, Alyssa (and Cubbie!)  is available to come out if we need her. We also have some great friends out here in Delaware that have helped and have offered to help if we need it. We are very thankful for the support system God has provided us with.

After taking care of the babies full time for two days, Daddy has a new appreciation for all of the work mommy does... He's just a little worn out! :)

The Babies Are Here!

Monday around 7:00pm or so, I started having pretty consistent contractions. Around 8:15, they were about two minutes apart, so we decided it was time to call the doctor. She called back pretty quickly and told us to head to the hospital to get checked out. This is me just before we left for the hospital... my belly wasn't really HUGE like everyone thought it should be...

We got to the hospital and they hooked me up to the monitors and agreed that I was having contractions every couple minutes. I was only dilated to 2cm. My doctor asked if I would be willing to walk for two hours and then get check again. So Brent and I walked around the hospital from 10:15 to 12:15. The contractions got a little worse, but when I got checked again around 12:30 am I was still only at 2cm. The doctor wanted me to stay on the monitors for a bit, have some fluids, and get checked again in about an hour. The nurse checked me at 1:45am and I was then dilated to 3cm. They decided this was the real thing and got me ready to be admitted. We got upstairs to the labor and delivery room about 3:00am and my doctor broke Emily's water at 3:15am. She said she thought we probably would deliver sometime between noon and 3pm. Around 4:30am I asked for an epidural in hopes of getting some sleep. It was around 5:00 am that I got my epidural - as first it was wonderful and I did manage to sleep for a little while. Around 6:45am or so, the epidural was only working on my right side and I was feeling every contraction again. The nurse said she could give me another dose of the epidural meds, but she wanted to check me first. She checked and said I was already dilated to 9.5 cm, so she called in the doctor and woke Brent up. This also meant no more of the epidural drugs. At 7:15 am my doctor was in and checking me. She had me to a could practice pushes and Emily's head was right there. They took me to the OR quickly (a precaution because of twins) and got everything set up for a vaginal delivery. With a couple good pushed, Emily came out head first at 7:38 am weighing 3 pounds 9 ounces and was 18 inches long. The first sent of NICU doctors and nurses took her right away and got her airways and such cleaned out and started checking her out. My doctor then did an ultrasound to see what Kyle had done with all his extra room - and of course, the little dude decided to go feet down. My doctor stuck her hand in and tried to grab his feet. She broke his water and then started to pull him out. His little head managed to finally make it out at 7:44 am. Kyle weighed 5 pounds 12 ounces and is 18 inches long. He got taken by is own team of NICU doctors and nurses to get checked out.

Emily was doing well. She didn't have any issues other than being so small! I couldn't believe how small she was because at my last growth ultrasound they said she was 4 pounds 7 ounces - they were off a little bit!

Kyle was having some problems breathing on his own right away, so they had him hooked up to oxygen for a couple minutes. But by the time he left the OR, he was breathing fine on his own.

My doctor delivered both of the placentas and then got me all stitched up. I was amazing right away about how well I felt - I was just tired, not in much pain or anything. I got to hold both Emily and Kyle for a couple minutes before they took them off to the NICU for observation. Emily's little tongue was going nuts while I was holding her, and she was looking around at her strange new world. Kyle was content with his eyes closed and just being held!

They took both my babies to the NICU and then took me back to my labor and delivery room. I got to eat and hang out for a bit before being taken upstairs for the maternity unit. We got situated and met with one of the lactation nurses. After pumping for the first time, we headed down to the NICU to see our babies. Kyle had already been taken upstairs to the Late Pre-Term Nursery to join me in my room after some more observation. We visiting Emily for a little bit and I got to hold my little girl again. The nurse said said was going well. They were helping her regulate her body temp and her blood sugar.

When we got back upstairs we had to wait a bit to see Kyle, but eventually got to have him with us for a little bit, then he was taken back to the nursery for a little more observation.
Kyle joined us around 5:30 in our room and has been with us every since. He's a little trooper - has kept his body temp right where it needs to be and hasn't had anymore problems breathing. He really likes the little bit of breast milk I have been able to give him, and last night started the formula a lot better. Wednesday morning the pedi came and checked Kyle out. All looked good, except she heard a heart murmur. The poor little boy had to have his blood pressure taken (a way big deal when you're only 24 hours old), an EKG and an eco to make check on it. The cardiologist said that he doesn't think it's a big deal and says it should go away in a couple weeks on his own. Kyle also had his circumcision, so it's been a long day for him and he still has his car seat test to go!

Emily is still in the NICU and will be for probably at least a week. She is in a little "box" to help her keep warm enough and on IV fluids to help keep her blood sugar where it needs to be. She really likes breast milk, but doesn't seem to like the formula and has a hard time keeping food down. Wednesday morning, a feeding tube was put in to help her eat and keep food down. She is doing much better with eating now!
I will go home on Thursday (tomorrow) and Kyle will come with me as long as he can pass his car seat test. Hopefully in the next week or two Emily will be able to come home too!
Thank you everyone for all of the prayers. Please keep praying for us as we do still have a long road ahead with preemie babies made all the more difficult because one will be home and one still at the hospital in the NICU.
I will try to post more pictures on Facebook once we get home. For some reason it won't let me with the hospital's Internet.

Finally an Update!

Sorry for the slowness in updating... It's been a long week and most of my "free" time as been spent sleepy or trying to sleep.

Sunday I started having contractions at church... at first they were about 10 minutes apart, but once we got home and I laid down and rested they slowed to 20-30 minutes apart. Monday I was still having contractions 20-30 minutes apart and in the afternoon they were starting to be a little more uncomfortable, so I gave the doctor a call and they sent me to the hospital. I was hooked up to the monitors and watched for a bit. They did a test called an fFN test, which came back negative - that told the doctors I had at least another two weeks before I go into labor. My cervix was still closed, but it was soft. They told me to go home and take it easy.

Wednesday we went to Maternal Fetal for the BPP ultrasound. They basically are watching for the babies' movement and "practice breathing." They get points for moving their body, for the practice breathing, for moving their arms and legs, and other such things. Kyle and Emily both got perfect scores! Emily's heart was a lot better, but still not completely normal. Before she was having the extra beat in every pattern, but on Wednesday it was only once every 5 or 6 patterns! The tech was trying to get pictures of the babies for me, but they weren't cooperating very well. In the 3D we could kind of see Emily's face, but she wasn't staying very still and kept putting her arms in from of her face, along with her umbilical cord. We did get a 3D picture of Kyle's ear... but couldn't see his face because it was hiding behind Emily's butt! We did however see his little boy parts in 3D a couple times - he kept showing those off! Silly boy!

Friday I had an appt with my OB. She told me my cervix is all thinned out, but not dilated yet. I have been having more frequent headaches and seeing flashing lights when I have headache - apparently this is related to my blood pressure, which is a little high. She reduced my work hours to only 6 hours a day - hoping to give me time to get more rest and such. More rest should help slow down my contractions (still having pretty consistently 30-45 minutes apart) and should help my blood pressure stay down.

We got back to Maternal Fetal next Wednesday for another BPP and then Friday to the OB - pray for no trips to the hospital this week!

First Trip to the Hospital of the New Year

I have had a pretty rough week. It started over the weekend when it felt like Kyle and Emily were doing flips in my belly. Then Monday night I started to get lower back pain and it kind of went down hill from there. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during the day I was having sporadic cramping that I was pretty sure were contractions. They got worse at night and were accompanied by lower back pain. This morning I called and spoke with a nurse at my doctor's office and she was pretty sure they were contractions too. I got sent to the hospital to get checked out. When I got to the hospital, they hooked up me to the monitors and watched my babies and my contractions. The doctor checked me all out and I am not dilated at all, which is a good thing. She said that at this stage in my pregnancy there is a fine line between what is normal and what is pre-term labor because of the fact that I am having twins. She said right now it doesn't seem to be much to worry about, but if I get to the point where I am having more than six contractions in an hour that I need to call my doctor and head to the hospital. She also said that I probably would keep having these contractions until I go into labor and have the babies... so I guess I better get used to it! We'll see what my doctor has to say at my appt next Friday.
The good news is that Kyle and Emily appear to be perfectly fine! I love my little babies and am very excited to meet them.... but I really would like them to stay in my belly for at least another 6 weeks... hopefully they will stay in there though for another 8!

A Trip to Michigan and a Trip to the Hospital

Last week we were able to go home to Michigan for a whole week! It's the longest we have been home since moving to Delaware. We left on Friday around 5 pm and got to my mom's house around 3:30 am on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon we had a baby shower with my family and friends in the area. It was a lot of fun and we got lots of things for Kyle and Emily. Saturday night we headed to Battle Creek to the Christmas musical at Calvary and then spent the night at Brent's parents' house. Sunday we went to Calvary for church, had lunch with Mom and Dad, Aunt Judy, Uncle Randy, and Aunt Debbie - and then headed back to Williamston on the snowy roads! Monday night we did Christmas with my family and then just kinda hung out until Wednesday. On Tuesday we were able to hang out with Grandma and Grandpa Johnson for a little bit. Wednesday night we headed back to Battle Creek. On Thursday we went to lunch with Grandma and Grandpa Cary and celebrated Christmas with them. Brent then headed to Indiana with Jason (his brother in law) to help move stuff, and I went to another baby shower with Brent's family and friends in Battle Creek. This shower was also fun and we got more things for Kyle and Emily! Friday we celebrated Christmas with Brent's family. Saturday we celebrated Grandma's 75th birthday, hung out with some friends, and playing games with Mom, Alyssa, and Shane. Sunday we went to Northeastern and Calvary for church. After church, my mom and Mike and Kara came down to meet us and we had lunch with them, Brent's parents and Alyssa and Shane. And then... we made the long trip back to Delaware. We had a great time in Michigan with all of our family and friends! Thank you to everyone who made our trip enjoyable and who took part in the Christmas celebrations and Baby Showers.

On Monday afternoon I started having really bad pain in my belly and it kept getting really hard. I called my doctor and they told me to head over to the hospital. Apparently I was really dehydrated and that's what was causing the problems. After checking to make sure everything was okay with the babies and getting my re-hydrated, I was sent home with instructions to drink LOTS of water. I have felt much better since - just have been exhausted.

22 Weeks and Baby Names!

For those of you that don't know yet, we have decided on names for our little babies. Our little girl is Emily Doris and our little boy is Kyle Myron.

Yesterday we had another ultrasound with Maternal Fetal. Both of the babies looked good and would not stop moving the whole time. Emily and Kyle are both about a pound and about a foot long. They are growing at a good rate and are withing 4% of each other. Emily is head down and Kyle is currently in a breech position. The other good news is that Emily's placenta has moved up more and I no long have placenta previa! I only got a couple pictures because both babies had their backs out, so it was hard to get pictures of their faces. I will try to get them scanned in the next couple days.

I go tomorrow and see my OB, so we'll see what she has to say. Hopefully she will say everything is good too.

I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight finally. I never thought I would think gaining 20 pounds was a good thing... but in this case, it is very much a good thing!

In other news... our house is officially on the market!

Another Trip to the Hosptial

Yesterday morning I woke up about 3:00am and threw up... then was very hungry, so I ate something....and then threw that up. Then then about a half an hour later, threw up again.... and then again... and that's kinda how most of my morning went. By lunch time I was VERY hungry, so I ate and it stayed down for a while....but eventually I threw it up. I was feeling pretty miserable and dehydrated, so I called my doctor and they sent me back to the OB triage to get re hydrated. I got there about 4:45 and was checked-in/registered pretty quickly, but then several ladies showed up in active labor, so I had to wait a while for a room. Brent had to leave to go to church for Wednesday night stuff, so I called Karen (my "Delaware Mom") and she came and sat with me most of the night. About 6:45 or so I finally got put in a room and they took a urine sample. The nurse didn't even wait for the doctor to tell her to start my IV because of how dehydrated I was. They pumped me full of LOTS of fluid...it took a bag and a half before I had to pee the first time...if that tells you anything! They also gave me meds to calm down my stomach. At 8:30 or so they let me eat some crackers and ginger ale. It took me almost an hour to eat/drink it.... but shortly after it was gone, some of it came back up. They gave me more don't throw up meds.... and I still threw up again a little while later. Around mid-night they sent me home.... I came home and slept better than I have slept in a long time! I ate my breakfast about an half hour ago and still don't feel like I am going to throw up!! :) So now I think it's about time to get ready and try to go to work.

A Trip to the Hospital

The last couple days I have not been feeling well. Yesterday everything I ate or drank came back up. This morning I still didn't feel very good and didn't keep down my breakfast, so I called the doctor and they told me to go to the hospital. And so I did... they gave me an IV and re hydrated me and gave me some different meds to keep me from throwing up. I could definitely tell the difference after the first IV bag. After I was feeling better and had kept something down, they sent me home! So now I am home and gonna sleep the rest of the afternoon :)
