I woke up this morning in so much pain that if I wouldn't already have had an appointment scheduled I would have been calling the doctor asking if I should be seen or needed to go to the hospital...
I wasn't having contractions, but was in constant pain. There was so much pressure in my pelvis, it felt like my hips were breaking.
I made it to the doctor... and the nurse who took my back said "I'm not going to even ask how you are, you look like you're in a lot of pain!"
The doctor came in and we talked for a minute and then she checked everything out.
Peyton has dropped down low into my pelvis, the word she used was "engaged." This mean the kiddo will stay head down until he comes out... so that's good... but it also means that I am going to have pain/pressure until he comes out.
She agreed that I'm not having contractions, but uterus just seems to be really tight and not relaxing. There's been a few times it has "relaxed" in the past couple hours and when that happens, I am comfortable and most of the pain goes away... and then it comes back...
She said that based on her exam and my past labor history, that I am in the early stages of labor. She said history could repeat itself and this could go on for a few weeks, or I could go into active labor any time.
At this point, they won't do anything to stop labor if I start to progress, but its recommend that I don't do anything to encourage it to progress for a couple more weeks. The goal is to make it to 37 weeks (December 29). My hope is to make it until 38 weeks (Jan 5th... the day after Brent gets back from winter camp with the teens).
She said that if I was still pregnant and miserable at 38 weeks, she could strip my membranes to try to help things along and if I made it to 39 weeks (Jan 12), she would happily induce me. She said we would talk about those options more if we get there.
She also gave me a prescription for a back brace for after I give birth. After I had Colby, I had major back pain where I broke my back. Wearing my back brace helped, but it was a pain to get on and off and I couldn't nurse in it. She recommended a specific durable medical supply place to go to and see what they would recommend. She wrote the prescription generic enough that I will be able to get whatever brace they recommend and hopefully we can avoid the back pain this time around.

A Ministry, House, and Health Update
Sorry I've been blow with updates about the "boring" stuff (aka- stuff that doesn't really have to do with Emily and Kyle).
Ministry
We heard back from the church in Ohio. They hired someone else. The pastor told Brent that he was very impressed with him and would recommend him to anyone...
The church in Ann Arbor told Brent that he is in their "Top 2", but that wanted to only focus on one candida at a time and they had already started talking to the other guy in the top 2, so they were going to pursue him first. I was stalking the church website and the other guy is being presented to the church the first weekend in February. They are also voting that weekend, so I'm guessing we should know something about where we stand the following week.
Brent is still sending out his resume and search for churches to apply to.
House
We have officially been approved for a short sale and are now in "Phase 2" of the process. From my understanding this is where we stay until we have an offer or too much time passes. If too much time passes, then we have to sign our house over to the bank in lieu of foreclosure.
Health
Brent is feeling all better. His CT results came back negative - meaning everything looked good. I think the best guess was to what was causing the headache was a sinus infection
I've decided for the time being I do not need to go back to see the neurosurgeon for my back. I'm feeling good for the most part. If I move just right or twist funny, it really hurts. I still am having some muscle soreness, but it is way better than it was and I am for sure having more good days than bad day. I am still using heat and my TENS unit, so that helps.
Emily and Kyle have been congested and had a cough for about two and a half weeks. It doesn't really seem to be getting any better or any worse and it doesn't really seem to bother them (except for the constant sucking their noses). If they are still the same on Monday, we're going to make an appointment with the doctor.
Please keep on praying for us!

Mommy is Done With Therapy
Yesterday was my last physical therapy appointment!
I still haven't decided yet if I need to make another appointment with the neurosurgeon. I'm thinking I am going to wait another week and see how I feel before deciding.

Mommy Still has a Broken Back
I went to the doctor's this morning. My back is still broken. But is healing.
The doctor said the majority of my pain/numbness/tingling is being caused by inflammation around my spine above my break. He said this is most likely caused by my posture being different from breaking my back. I'm supposed to try to sit up and stand up straight all the time... it should help. Also, continuing to use my TENS unit, heat, and ice should help.
The doctor said it was okay to pick up both babies at the same time when I needed to, just not to hold on to them both for long periods of time.
Still shouldn't be doing laundry or emptying the bottom shelve of the dishwasher.
He wrote me a script for another month of therapy. If I'm still having lots of problems at that point, then I am to go back and see him to talk about surgery treatment options.
He said that I am probably going to have pain for about a year from my fall...and after that it will probably both me every once in a while for the rest of my life. But the goal is to be able to have more good days than bad days..... and right now, there are still more bad days....

Update on Life...
Last week I wrote that the church in Ohio had contacted Brent about a phone interview. His interview is tomorrow afternoon.... so if you think about it, please pray for him and the pastor interviewing him.
Other exciting news... we are finally moving forward with Bank of America with the short sale process. We were originally told in March that we didn't need to do anything with the bank until we had an offer for a short sale. We then found out in June that we needed to get approved first.... and we have been trying to get approved since June. We have been having all sorts of issues (the bank is stupid and keeps changing policies and losing paperwork and blah blah blah). Last week after still being given the run around, I emailed the CEO (after a friend suggested it), and finally as of Friday we are officially in Phase I of the short sale process!
To go along with that...someone submitted an offer last Tuesday! Unfortunately they weren't aware that we were doing a short sale. Our realtor contacted theirs and they said they were still interested, but have yet to return the short sale addendum to us, so we're really not sure what's going on with that....
My back is finally starting to feel better. I'm still having tingling in my arms and pain in my back, but it's better than it was. I've still been going to physical therapy three mornings a week. Tomorrow I go back to see the neurosurgeon, so we'll see what he has to say and if he wants me to continue with therapy.
A couple days ago Kyle figured out how to undo the Velcro on his helmet. After he undid that a few times, he figured out if he pushed enough on his helmet, he could get it off his head. So now when he has his helmet on, all he does is try to get it off. This afternoon, within an hour, Kyle had his helmet off five times. I finally just left it off of him. We are going to AI before we go to Michigan to get new Velcro put on his helmet, so hopefully that will solve the problem.
We're leaving in a couple days for Michigan! We're very excited to see family and friends... but not really looking forward to the LONG drive with the babies. I think the longest we've been in the car with the babies has only been two hours. We are planing on driving through the night, so hopefully the babies will just sleep. Please pray for us as we prepare to leave and as we make the long drive.

A long day....
This morning started out early for me with physical therapy. After therapy, I came home to two happy babies... who both wanted to sit in my lap. It's kind of cute that they fight over my lap when I am sitting on the floor playing with them... but it gets a little old pretty quickly. They like to shove and push each other out of the way so they can have more room... or all of my lap! Silly babies :)
Kyle and Emily took a nice long nap this morning, which allowed me to get a bunch of stuff done, including relaxing a little bit.
When they woke up, I went into their room to change diapers and put clothes on them (they still had their jammies on). I changed Emily and then Kyle. They were sitting on the floor playing while I took care of their dirty diapers and dirty clothes. When I went back into their room, I noticed a clean diaper sitting on the floor. I really didn't think much of it, just thought I had grabbed three diapers instead of two. I thew it back in the bin with the other clean ones. We played for a little while and then I took Kyle and Emily downstairs to eat lunch. When I picked Emily up, I thought something felt weird, but quickly moved on to the task at hand of getting both babies downstairs safely. I clicked Kyle into his highchair and then went to click Emily in... Her straps seemed to be really loose. It was then I realized that I hadn't grabbed three clean diapers... I only grabbed two... and I forgot to put a new diaper on Emily after I took her dirty one off! My baby girl did good though... she was diaperless for about 20 minutes and didn't make any messes!
After the babies ate, we went to go visit Brent at work. I really wanted Primos, so I called Brent and told him we were coming when we were playing upstairs. Then I decided against it because it would mean leaving the house with both babies by myself. But then I realized that I was going to have to go out by my self with the babies again at some point, so why not now.... So, for the first time since I broke my back, Emily, Kyle, and I ventured out into the world. It was a little interesting to get both babies into the car and into their big kid car seats... to get the diaper bag and everything else we needed to take with us... and to get the door lock. But we did it... and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It was a little bit harder getting everyone and everything back in once we got back home, but I made it work! :)
Once we got home, I tried to get the babies to take an afternoon nap... but they wanted nothing to do with it. So we played :)
It's amazing how mobile Kyle and Emily have become in the past couple weeks. They are everywhere and into everything! They love to be up and walking around.
After Brent got home from work, we went for a walk... in December... without winter jackets! It's crazy how warm it is!

A Back Update
I've been going to physical therapy for three weeks now. I go Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings before Brent goes to work. I start out with heat, e. stim., ultrasound, and massage. Then do some stretches and exercises.
The first week was great.... I was feeling better and better and was able to do more and more. Last Monday afternoon however, I started to hurt pretty bad again. On Wednesday at therapy, they just had me do the first stuff and none of the exercises to see if that would help. I felt better again until Wednesday afternoon... and it's kind of been the same thing since. I feel better for a little bit after they loosen everything up, but then within a couple hours, I am in pain again. They are trying to get an at home e. stim. machine approved by my insurance; I should have an answer about that by Friday. This morning, they told me that I had swelling again around my broken vertebra - which could be causing my pain and the numbness and tingling in my arms. So I'm supposed to be doing ice and heat to try to help with that.
I don't go back to the doctor again until the 20th... so hopefully I will be okay until then.

Mommy Went to the Doctor
I had my follow up visit for the neurosurgeon today. My back looks "good." The fractures are not any worse, which is what we were hoping for. Apparently, the doctors can't tell at this point if they are any better, so the doctors look for the fractures not to be any worse... I guess that kind of make sense :)
The treatment plan for now is to
The treatment plan for now is to
- wear my brace less. He explained that when I wear my brace, it holds my back straight and stuff and doesn't allow my muscles too. So I need to start wearing my brace less so that my muscles will start doing their job again.
- go to physical therapy three times a week for six weeks. I start next Monday.
- still follow the rule "if it hurts, don't do it"
I'm doing okay picking up Kyle and Emily and carrying them around the house. I have a little bit of trouble getting them in and out of their cribs, but I have figured out ways to make it work. I still can't carrying the babies in their car seats, so if I have to go somewhere by my self, I will have to put the seats in the car and then put the babies in their seats.
The other big thing that happened today.... the babies had a babysitter! They have stayed with grandmas a couple times while they have been sleeping, but we have never left them with anyone during the day before while they were awake and active! Our friend April (who has lots of experience with multiples) babysat for us while Brent was at work and I went to the doctor. The babies did well... and mommy too (I didn't have any problem leaving them)! Kyle was still awake when I got home and was very happy to see me. And Emily had a big smile on her face when she woke up from her nap and saw me! That made my day :)

Mommy's Back.... Still broken
My back isn't really seeming to get any better or any worse. I'm trying to take it easy and only do the things I know aren't going to hurt, but it's hard. Anyone who knows me, knows I have a hard time sitting still and asking for help. Mornings and evenings seem to be when I am in the most pain... and I seem to be okay in the middle of the day.
I've been having lots of muscles spasms, but haven't wanted to take the muscle relaxers because the babies can't have my breast milk for 48 hours if I do. So yesterday, Brent bought me a heating pad to try to help my muscles relax.
I'm doing okay carry Emily around. I can pick Kyle up with only a little bit of pain if I am sitting down (lots of pain if I am standing). I can sit on the floor and play with the babies. I can't pick the babies up when they are laying in their cribs, or lay them down in their cribs. I can get the babies in their car seats, but there is no way I am going to be able to pick up the car seats any time soon.
I am very thankful for our families and friends and their willingness to help. I'm very thankful that we have parents and sisters who are willing to drive/fly out here to help out! I'm not sure what we are doing to do when we "run out" of family help in two and a half weeks. Hopefully by they time I will be able to take care of the babies by my self when Brent is working.

Update On Mommy's Back
I'm doing okay... as long as I don't do too much, I don't hurt too bad. Riding in the car is NOT fun - I feel every little bump... and the big bumps give me some sharp shooting pains.
I can hold both of the babies if I am sitting down and don't have any more pain than normal. I can pick Emily up and carry her around without a problem. If I am standing and holding Kyle, I don't have any pain, but if I pick Kyle up, it hurts pretty bad. I can't reach in their cribs to get them... or even to hold their bottles for them if they are laying in their cribs eating.
If I pick up the full water pitcher or a full gallon of milk and only use one hand, it hurts.
I have a hard time getting up off the floor by my self if I don't have anything to pull myself up on... and it hurts if I don't use both hands.
When I am brushing my teeth and bend over to spit, it hurts.
Getting in and out of the car hurts.
Putting dishes in or taking them out of the bottom tray on the dishwasher hurts.
Sleeping is getting better. I was told that sleeping flat on my back was best. My new pillow made a huge difference, but after laying on my back for four or five hours, I start to get muscles spasms. I was given a muscle relaxer to help with this, but Kyle and Emily can't have my breastmilk if I take it... so instead I have been laying on my side for a little bit and that has been helping.
I'm very thankful for all of the help from my Mom and Mike! I'm sad that they are leaving tomorrow... but on Monday, Brent's Mom will be here for 10 days to help out! :)

Mommy Broke Her Back
Sunday afternoon I was bringing Kyle downstairs after his nap... And I slipped on the stairs! I protected Kyle and took the brunt of the fall on the middle of my back. Brent grabbed Kyle (who is fine) and called 911 while I tried my best to stay still.
The ambulance got there and the EMT's put a neck brace on me and loaded me up on the back board. They took me to hospital and then I laided and staired at the ceiling for a little bit. Eventually, doctors and nurses took me off the back board and I got sent for a CT.
The CT showed a fracture in my T4 vertabra. This meant they had to send me to the trama center at another hospital, so they loaded me up and I went for another ambulance ride.
Once at Christiana, we waited in the ED for a long time. I eventally saw the trama doctors. They admitted me and ordered an MRI. I got to my room about midnight, and had my MRI around 3am.
I had to lay flat on my back with the neck brace on and wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything until they got the MRI results back to know if I needed to have surgery or not. I also had to attempt to pump while laying flat on my back... let's just say that got a little messy - but with the nurses' help, we made it work. :)
A little after noon, the nurse said the neurosurgeon read the MRI results and they finally let me drink and moved my bed so I could sit up a little bit! We knew this was a good sign that I wasn't going to need surgery!
Around 4pm the neurosurgeon finally came in. He said no surgery! He also informed me that I have not one, but two fractures (T3 & T4). He said my neck was okay, so he took the brace off my neck. He helped me sit up and checked me all out. He told me I was allowed to get up out of bed and could move around a little bit. He also ordered a brace for me. He told me that if I had to break my back, I broke it in the best place with the best type of fracture.
I spent one more night in the hospital and am now at home! The only restriction is "if it hurts, don't do it." But really.. that means not bending and twisting or picking up anything heavy. He told me Kyle was probably the heaviest thing that I was going to want to pick up. I am pretty sore still and moving carefully. I haven't picked up the babies yet, but have cuddled with them in my chair and sat on the floor and played with them. I'm very happy to be home with my babies again... I missed them very much!
My mom and Michael (step-dad) are here right now and are staying through the weekend. Next week Brent's mom is coming out (which was already planned) and then the following week Kara is coming out to help. And the week after that, Alyssa (and Cubbie!) is available to come out if we need her. We also have some great friends out here in Delaware that have helped and have offered to help if we need it. We are very thankful for the support system God has provided us with.
After taking care of the babies full time for two days, Daddy has a new appreciation for all of the work mommy does... He's just a little worn out! :)
