Two Boys = Two ER Visits

For those of you that don't know, we are currently in Chicago on a missions trip with our teens. The teens are working with Vision for Youth and Inner City Impact doing a soccer camp. The kiddos and I are staying with Brent's sister Alyssa and her family and spending part of our days with Daddy and the teens.

Sunday the teens were all at Alyssa and Shane's house helping with a move and as they were getting ready to leave on Sunday night, Colby fell and smacked his mouth on a shelf. He screamed and was bleeding and missing part of his tooth. We called our pediatrician's office and after talking to the on-call physician, decided Colby needed to go to the ER to get check out. Kyle and Emily stayed with Alyssa and Shane while Colby and I went to the hospital. They checked him all out at the hospital. He has four teeth... he broke both of the top two.... The ER doctor said he was fine to wait until we got home to go to the dentist, but will probably need root canals and crowns on both teeth!

Today Alyssa and Harper (her 3 month old) joined the kids and I when we went to hang out with the teens. The kids were sitting on the bleachers and Alyssa and I kept telling Emily and Colby to sit down because they were climbing all over. At one point, Emily got her arm stuck and I had to get her some ice. Kyle was sitting still on the bottom bench (about a foot off the ground) and somehow fell. I hopped right up to him expecting him to start screaming but be fine. As soon as I saw his arm, I knew it was broken and most likely badly broken.

Brent called 911 and Kyle screamed the whole time we waited for the ambulance to get there. As soon as we got into the ambulance, he calmed down and didn't cry again until they set his arm.

Luckily Alyssa was there and took care of Emily and Colby. She, along with one of our teens (Gabby), got the kids into the van and met us at the hospital.

I thought Kyle would be excited about the ambulance right, but at the time he didn't really seem to care. Once we got to the hospital, we got checked in and not to long after that a PA saw Kyle in triage and said the same thing as the EMT's... it's was broken, but the real question was how bad. Once Gabby was inside with Kyle and I, she went with Kyle to get his x-rays (since Mommy couldn't stay with him because of the baby in my belly). Gabby and the tech both said he did really good while he was getting his x-rays.

A little while later the doctor same and showed us the x-ray. He broke both bones in his right forearm. Normally when little kids break bones they just kind of bend them... but Kyle completely broke both bones.

The plan was to sedate him so they could set the bones. They got him all ready with his IV and hooked up to all the monitors and stuff.. and then they gave him the meds and nothing happened. After three doses, he was a little silly, but still WIDE awake. They pharmacist came in, and her and the doctor were both very confused why Kyle was still awake. They tried a different drug and within seconds he was asleep. They set his arm and put a temporary cast on it and then we had to wait for him to wake up. It took a little longer than expected, but eventually he woke up. He was kind of crabby, but that was to be expected. After he went pee, ate some crackers, and drank some juice, he were finally able to be discharged.

Alyssa was AMAZING and kept Harper, Emily, and Colby content all afternoon between the car and ER waiting room! She was waiting for us when we came out... and we got some food and took Gabby back to the teens and headed home!

On the way home, it was funny listening to Kyle tell Emily all about riding in the ambulance, getting x-rays taken, and showing off his cast! When I put him to bed, he was really excited to go show the teenagers tomorrow!

So, next week when we get home, Colby will get to see the dentist and Kyle will get to see an orthopedic for his BLUE cast!

Trip To Delaware!

'The kiddos, mommy, and some friends took a long weekend trip to Delaware!!

Our awesome friends Charity and Gabby offered to take a road trip with us so we could go visit our Delaware friends!

We left on Thursday morning and made a few pit stops...and finally got to Philly about 1:30 on Friday morning. The kiddos did amazing in the car. On the way there, the only potty accident we had was from Kyle... but it was while we were eating dinner, so at least it wasn't in the car!

Once we got to the hotel, it took a little bit to get the kiddos all settled, but once they were settled, they did a lot better in the hotel than I thought they would... so after a few short hours of sleep, we headed to Old City to check out the Liberty Bell. We took a horse carriage tour of Old City. Most of us had fun... when we asked Kyle if he was having fun, he said yes and Emily replied "Emmy no fun!"

Once we got back to the van, we decided that Emily was more than just tried... and that she didn't feel good and felt like she had a fever.

We headed into Delaware and had Primos for lunch. It was VERY yummy. While at lunch, Gabby changed Colby's diaper and noticed he was starting to get a rash. I didn't look at it too much and figured it was just a heat rash and would be fine.

After lunch, we headed over to Bob and Lindsey's house to meet two of their three (almost four) week old triplets! They were so tiny! We also gave Bob some "Tim Nuts!" Emily pretty much cuddled with whoever would cuddle with her and Kyle had fun playing with Autumn (Bob and Lindsey's 22 month old daughter).

While we were at Bob and Lindsey's, we notice Colby rash was spreading....so we checked it out a little bit more and decided it was hives. I called our pediatricians office and was told to give him some benadryll and take him to the ER to get him checked out.

So... we said our good byes and headed over to AI (the children's hospital) to get Colby check out. I also decided to have Emily checked out while we were there just to make sure she was okay. They really didn't  have much of an explanation for us for Colby's hives or Emily's fever. We were given an EPI pen for Colby and told to just keep giving him benadryll and if he started having issues breathing, to bring him back in. As we were waiting for discharge papers, I decided to check out Emily's month... and found two more teeth cutting through...By Saturday afternoon, Emily's fever was gone and she was back to normal around dinner time. Poor Colby was covered in hives all weekend!

After we were discharged from the ER we headed to Ryan and Modesty's house... where we were staying for the weekend.

When we got to Ryan and Modesty's house, we just hung out. The kiddos watched a movie and played for a while.

Saturday morning, we hung out at Ryan and Modesty. Our friends Jay Jay and Jenn came over with their two year old son Jayden, so all the kiddos could play together! They all seemed to have fun.

For lunch, we met Jay and Angel (one of my old bosses) at Christiana Mall. It was good to see them, but both kiddos were exhausted and weren't the best behaved kids! Colby was good though... even though it was still covered in hives!

After naps, we headed over to Henry and April's house for dinner. The kids ate more for dinner than they had in a while and Emily was finally acting their herself again. After dinner we got Ritas! Kyle and Emily weren't too sure about it... Kyle stated "Wet, Cold!"

Sunday we went to Iron Faith Fellowship and saw more people we knew! Then lunch with Ryan, Modesty, their boys, John, Randy, and Karen. It was yummy and good to talk with Randy and Karen a little bit.

After lunch, we just hung out at Ryan and Modesty's... after dinner, Ryan got bubbles for the kiddos to play with... and I finally got my camera out! Kyle and Austin ate more bubbles than they blew... but they all seemed to have fun.

After bubbles, all four "big" kids took a bath together. "Silly Emmy bath three boys!" They were pretty cute. Then we had a treat and enjoyed our last little bit of time with our friends.

Monday, once we got around, we headed to Lindsey's to drop off some stuff and say "hi" for a few minutes. Kyle started to cut teeth and run a fever around bedtime on Sunday, so he was crabby. We made one more stop at Primos and headed to Lancaster. We stopped at a park in Lancaster, Colby played in the grass... Emily played on the slide for a few minutes... and Kyle clung to Mommy... Other than that, we had a fairly uneventful trip home... I did figure out I could nurse Colby while he was in his car seat though, that was kind of interesting...

We had lots of fun. The kids did amazing with all the "new" people. I enjoyed seeing old friends and getting to know some new ones better!

Go Go Go On An Adventure!

We went to the Grand Rapids Children's Museum today with Aunt Kara and Ian.

Emily and Kyle patiently waited for Aunt Kara and Ian to get to our house!

We rolled balls down the slope and they bounced around and made music...

Emily needed a little bit of help.. she was too short!

We played with giant tinker toys...

And balls...

And mirrors...

And the bank...

And bubbles...

We even got to be in a bubble with Aunt Kara! Kyle thought it was fun to pop the bubble!

We went fishing...

 Played with an apple tree...

 And with shapes...

We also played in dirt and watched the bees!

Mommy and Colby were there too! But Colby took a nap in his wrap and mommy took all the pictures :)

Both kiddos did very well and didn't have any accidents on our adventure! We did take frequent potty breaks... :)
