Done with Stage One

Kyle and Emily have now eaten all of the "Stage One" foods! This includes apples, bananas, pears, peaches, prunes, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, squash, and peas.

Emily isn't much of a fan of the green veggies, but she tolerates them. Kyle will eat pretty much another we put in his mouth.

Our last "new" food was prunes. The babies both seemed to really enjoy the prunes.... but mommy didn't so much enjoy the results of Emily and Kyle eating the prunes. We had eight poopy diapers in a matter of 24 hours.

Once Emily and Kyle finish the rest of the stage one foods we have, then we will start to buy stage two foods!

Sippy Cups

Today I gave Emily and Kyle sippy cups with a little bit of water in them just to see what they would do. They knew they were cups and tries to put them in their mouths....and they played with the cups. They could drink from them with help from mommy, but not by themselves.

To Clear Something Up About Our Twins

As most of you know, Brent and I had issues getting pregnant because I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS causes my ovaries to develop several eggs at the same time (normally a women only produces one egg a month). Because I have so many eggs "fighting" for the hormones to mature at the same time, it takes my eggs longer to mature and I don't ovulate regularly. In women without PCOS, is takes about two weeks for an egg to mature and drop (ovulate). Because of my PCOS, it can take several months for my eggs to mature and drop, which makes it really hard to get pregnant because you really don't know when you're going to ovulate.
There are several different medications that can be used to help women with PCOS. The medication that I was on when we were trying to get pregnant causes my ovaries to produces more of the hormones needed to help my eggs mature faster. I was monitored by ultrasound, so that we could tell how my eggs were doing and we would know when I was going to ovulate.
This medication did increase our chances of having twins.... but ONLY by less than 1%. So really... the chances were the same of us having twins if I weren't taking the medication. The medication just helped us know "the right time" and gave us more chances in a shorter amount of time to get pregnant (without the medication, I was only ovulating about twice a year).
A lot of the time after a women with PCOS goes through a pregnancy, her body adjust the amount of hormones and she begins to ovulate monthly (like a women without PCOS) but she can still produce several eggs a month (known as hyper-ovulation).
My doctors have told me that if we try to have more babies, the chance of us having twins again is basically the same as it was with my first pregnancy (even if we don't use the medication again).

So... that being said...
Over the past year or so, lots of people have asked me if our twins were a result of fertility treatments. People have said that our twins were "medical induced" or "chemically induced" or that we only have twins because we were on medication for infertility.
These comments REALLY upset me...
Yes, we did have issues getting pregnant and did have to go see a fertility specialist... BUT the medication I was on only helped me get pregnant - it DID NOT cause me to have twins. The fact that I hyper-ovulate from PCOS is what blessed us with twins.

This is kind of a touchy subject for me.... my PCOS doesn't make me infertile, but it did/does cause a lot of the emotional "baggage" that comes with infertility.

Cloth Diaper Progress Report

Using cloth diapers is really as easy as I thought it would be!

We've had a couple really poopy diapers from both babies, but the liners have caught most of the poop, so I've been able to just dump it in the toilet and it hasn't been a big deal.

We've gotten in the habit of washing bottles after we put the babies to bed, so at the same time, we are running the diapers through the washer. To wash, I have been doing a cold rinse, a hot wash, and then an extra cold rinse. To dry, we have bought a drying rack, so I just hang the diapers and inserts on the rack and let them dry overnight.

Right now, I am having to throw them in the dryer in the morning for a couple minutes so that they will finish drying in time. We currently only have 18 diapers and that's how many we have been using.... so if the babies want dry diapers when they wake up, I am to speed up the drying process a little bit. Once we get our six free ones, we should be able to not use the dryer. Hopefully those extra six will be here soon - the website says it takes four to six weeks.... I am hoping that it's closer to the four weeks because it would really be nice to have some more diapers now... but I just need to be patient :)

Emily isn't seeming to have any problems adjusting to them.
Kyle has had a little bit of a diaper rash / heat rash. It has been a little bit warmer the past couple days and the cloth diapers are not as "breathable" as the disposables... and the little dude sweats sooooo much! You can't use diaper cream with the cloth diapers, so I have been putting Vaseline on him (thanks for the suggestion Jen!) and that seems to be helping. I did read today though that Aveeno Diaper Cream is okay to use because it's all natural and oatmeal based, so if it's not better in the next day or too, I might try some of that.

Just Cause My Kids Are Cute...

Kyle decided it looked like more fun to crawl into the bottom than sit in the top! Silly Boy!

No More Disposable Diapers!

The rest of our FuzziBunz that I ordered came today!!! Just in time too - we used the last disposable diapers this morning that were open! (I was really hoping that we didn't have to open another pack!)

So we currently have 18 FuzziBunz, and 6 more will be on their way as soon as I get the proof of purchases mailed in for the free ones!

The last couple days we have been using the cloth diapers we had and then using Pampers rest of the time. It has been pretty easy so far... The last two days, both babies have only pooped in the Pampers (which I was thankful for), but I was waiting for the first poop in the cloth (yeah, I know... I'm crazy). Well... I got what I was waiting for when Emily and Kyle woke up from their nap. Emily had one poopy diaper - I'm pretty sure it would have been a blow out if she would have had a Pamper on. Most of the poop stayed in the liner, so I just dumped it in the toilet and flushed... and the rest I quickly rinsed out in the sink. It was pretty easy - and really not that yucky!

So far, the only thing I really don't like about the cloth diapers is the extra fluff they add to Kyle and Emily's bottoms.... but that's not really a big deal and we'll get used to it. In the long run, it's probably a good thing - it will help keep their pants up :)

28 Weeks Old and New Diapers!

Favorite Foods

Kyle and Emily have now eaten apples, bananas, pears, peaches, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, and rice cereal.

So far...
Kyle's favorite fruit seems to be peaches and his favorite veggie seems to be green beans! I would say he probably likes the green beans the best overall.
Emily's favorite fruit seems to be pears and her favorite veggies seems to be sweet potatoes. She seems to prefer any fruit over any veggies - just like her mommy!

Tonight we are going to try squash!

And It Begins!

Yesterday we ordered 12 FuzziBunz diapers, a hanging "pail", and a on the go diaper bag. Right now with FuzziBunz, for ever 6 you buy, you get 2 free by mail in rebate. So once the 12 come, we will mail in the proof of purchases and get 4 free!

After thinking about it and reading about "twin stashes", I came to the conclusion that we will be needing a few more diapers.

Today I found a place about a half an hour from us that carries the diapers. So I went and bough 6 diapers and got a hanging "pail". After I do the whole rebate thing with these, we will get 2 more free.

So, once we get all 6 of our free ones, we will have 24 diapers. I figure we'll have to do a load of diapers a night, which isn't too big of a deal.

I'm excited for Emily and Kyle to start wearing them!

Cloth Diapers

For the past couple weeks I have kind of been thinking about cloth diapers... Brent has been all about it since the very beginning.

I had been doing research and reading up on them... they are soooo different than what I would think of when I thought of cloth diapers. They really don't seem all that hard or like a whole lot of extra work!

And today, we ordered them! They should be here next week!

Kyle's Improvements

We went today to get Kyle's helmet adjusted and to physical therapy.

According to the measurements, Kyle's head is 1/16 of a centimeter better! I know this doesn't sound like a lot, but it really is!

Also, his physical therapy has reduced his therapy sessions to every over week instead of weekly! She has seen great improvement in Kyle's range of motion and strength in his neck!

Broken Broken Broken

In the past month and a half or so... we've had lots of things "break"....

  • The light in our extra bedroom/office stopped working
    • Thankfully my step-dad was able to fix it for us - it just needed a new switch
  • Brent's brakes on his car broke
    • Thankfully we had a friend who was able to fix them... and my parents took care of the bill as Brent's birthday present
  • My breast pump broke
    • Thankfully we bought the warranty and were able to get most of our money back for the new one that we had to buy
  • The drain clogged on the utility sink in the basement
    • Thankfully my step-dad was able to fix it for us
  • I spilled breastmilk all over one of our laptops and it died
    • Thankfully it turned on for a couple days and I was able to get most of the picture of Kyle and Emily on a DVD
    • I didn't think to get anything else off of it though... thankfully we have a friend who is going to look at it and see if he can get it to work again or at least get the rest of the stuff off of it for us
  • Our dishwasher broke
    • Thankfully a friend was able to fix it for us - it was just a loose wire
  • Brent's cell phone went through the wash machine
    • Thankfully we had one of my mom's old phones that Brent is able to use
    • We currently have it in a bag of rice and will try to turn it on in a couple days
What's going to break next?

Kyle's Follow Up Appointment with the Neurosurgeon

Kyle had a follow up appointment today with the neurosurgeon (the doctor who prescribed the helmet). He said he is happy with the way Kyle's helmet fits and that he thinks he already sees some improvement. He said to just keep wearing it as prescribed (23 hours a day) and that he will see us back when "the helmet people" say he's done. The hope is that Kyle's head will have a "normal" shape to it by Christmas.

Bye Bye Pacifiers Day #7

We've had an off day today.

Kyle woke up around 3:00am and wanted to eat... Brent fed him and he went back to sleep...

Emily woke up around 3:30am and wanted to play.... I stayed up with her until around 5:30am, when I put her in her swing and went to pump. When I was done pumping she fell asleep.

When it was time for a morning nap, both babies weren't feeling well. Kyle had already thrown up twice at this point. I cuddled with Kyle until he fell asleep and Brent cuddled with Emily. Emily was almost asleep when Brent put her in the crib with Kyle.

The babies were awake for about an hour, they ate, threw up, and then went back to sleep - both on their own in the crib.

In the afternoon, Kyle had a doctor's appointment, and he slept to and from the hospital. While we were gone, Emily slept for about a half an hour. We tried to get them to sleep more, but the babies just wanted to play.

We were getting ready to feed the babies their dinner time veggies, and Kyle decided to throw up all over our bed and all over himself. Brent took a shower with him to get him all clean, and while Kyle was in the shower with Brent, Emily decided she wanted to throw up too. So Emily also got to shower with Brent. This kind of threw off our bedtime routine because they didn't need baths anymore. We played for a bit and then did the rest of our normal bedtime stuff.

Kyle fell asleep eating most of his bottle.Kyle woke up after a little bit and finished his bottle and then went back to sleep.

Emily fell asleep for a little while and then decided she wanted to wake up and play. She currently is swinging and singing to herself.

We also discovered a little bit ago that when tearing the sheets and stuff off our bed to wash them (after both babies threw up all over our bed).... Brent's cell phone ended up in the wash machine :( It's currently in rice to see if it can be saved...

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day....

Update: Emily finally fell asleep around 11:30pm

Green Beans

I gave the babies green beans today!

Kyle loved them... pretty much like every other food we've tried to give them! I think he just loves to eat :)

Emily ate them... but made gaggy faces the whole time. I think she is going to be like her mommy used to be and not like green veggies! I will keep giving them to her, so hopefully they will grow on her.

We did peaches for the first time a few days ago, and neither one of them liked them at first. The second time we tried though, both Kyle and Emily seemed to really like the peaches. Hopefully this will be the case with Emily and green beans!

Bye Bye Pacifiers Day #6

Nap #1
Emily went to sleep without much fuss, but Kyle laid in the crib and whined for about an hour before he finally went to sleep. Then he only slept for about 20 minutes... but it was around the time they normally wake up and Emily was awake and both babies were happy and giggly, so I got them both up to play.
How could you not want to play with these two smiling faces?

Nap #2
Both babies were sleeping within five minutes of when I put them in their crib!

Nap #3
We took an extra nap today! I had to wake Emily and Kyle up to take them to the doctor's, and they were a little bit on the cranky side after we got home, so we decided we would try another nap. Emily took a couple minutes to fall asleep, but Kyle boycotted a nap.

Bed Time
Because Emily took a nap and Kyle rested, we started bedtime a little bit later. Both babies were so tired they had a hard time finishing their bottles. Kyle was asleep shortly after we put them in bed. Emily fussed a little bit and Brent got her to finish her bottle once she was in bed, and then she was out!

After Kyle and Emily got their shots today and were not very happy, we had to put them in their car seats, which made them even less happy. I tried to give both of them their pacifiers and they both just spit them out! Yay! for the babies not letting mommy cheat :)

Six Month Well Baby Visit

Emily is 12lbs and is 23 3/4 inches tall. She still isn't really on the growth curve for her age, but she is growing at a consistent rate and that's what matters.

Kyle is 14lbs 12 oz and is 26 1/2 inches tall. He's pretty much in the ten percentile for his age!

The pediatrician said they both look great!
We talked about eating habits and the doctor said it was fine that they weren't drink their whole bottles - he said that with breastmilk, it's hard to say how much they should be eating - he thinks when they set a specific amount that babies should be eat, that's what is causing so many obese babies. He said to kind of let them decide how much they are going to eat - of both milk and food, and that as long as they are growing, it's all good!

They each got three shots and one oral vaccine. They both did well! They cried for a little bit, but nothing to bad!

Yay! for healthy babies!

Things I've learned....

... being a mommy
  • When I'm having a bad day, my babies' smiles can make everything all better for a little while
  • My first thought is never about myself or Brent anymore, it's always about Kyle and Emily
  • During bath time, everyone gets wet
  • I can't do it all... sometimes I need help
  • I don't get sick days
  • Sleeping in?? What's that mean?
  • Diapers are expensive
  • I need to remember to eat and drink water
.... being a mommy of twins
  • Routines are a MUST - especially a bedtime routine since I do bedtime by my self three nights a week
  • It's nice to have two of things... swings, saucers, bumbo seats, high chairs, toys
  • If Kyle has something, Emily will want it too
  • If Emily has something, Kyle will want it too
  • It's okay if Kyle and Emily swap spit.... as in share pacifiers, spoons, slobber
  • Kyle and Emily are not aware of their personal space - they love to climb and crawl all over each other, and as long as they don't kick each other too hard in the face, they don't seem to mind the other one all up in their space
  • I can do bath time all by my self!
  • I love both of my children exactly the same amount (I was afraid I would have a favorite)
  • It is possible to fly with two babies - as long as daddy comes too
    • It's also possible to make it through 11 hours in the airport with two babies - as long as daddy is there too
  • It's okay to just smile and keep walking when people make twin comments - I don't have to spot and let them gawk at my babies
  • Sometimes I am just going to smell like breastmilk / spit up
  • As much of a pain as the double stroller is to get out of my trunk - using the stroller is WAY easier than carrying two carseats or using a cart
  • People say twins are "double trouble" and "double diapers" and so on.... I might have double the poopy diapers, double the spit up, double the work... But I also have double the smiles, double the giggles, double the hugs, double the cuddles, double the love... and double of all the good stuff.  :)

Bye Bye Pacifiers Day #5

Nap #1
Both babies fussed a little bit, but went to sleep fairly quickly after we put them down for their nap.

Nap #2
Emily, Kyle, and I went to visit our friend Modesty and her new baby Austin for lunch today. Kyle and Emily fell sleep in the car on their way home. When we got home, the babies woke up as we were coming in the house, but were put in their crib shortly after we got home. It took them a little bit, but they both fell asleep without too much of a fuss. Brent gave them the end of their bottles that they didn't finish to help them out.

Bed Time
Both babies were starting to get fussy, so they swung for a little bit before we started our bedtime routine. Emily decided she was only going to eat half of her bottle and then laid there and whined while Kyle finished his bottle and part of hers. Once I put in them in their crib, Kyle went right to sleep and Emily talked/whined for about fifteen minutes and then started screaming. I cuddled her for a couple minutes and she calmed down a little bit. I offered her the rest of her bottle, but she didn't want it - she just wanted to cry. I ended up giving her her pacifier - she sucked on it for about thirty seconds and then fell asleep. I took the pacifier out of her mouth and she woke up. She talked for about ten minutes and then fell back sleep.

Bye Bye Pacifiers Day #4

Our normal morning nap doesn't happen on Sundays because we are at church during that time... and then the rest of the day is kinda just go with the flow for whatever the babies seem like they need/want to do.

Nap #1
When we got home from church, we had the babies finish the rest of their bottles (they only ate a little bit during church) and then they went to bed. Both of them fell sleep pretty quickly and they took a nice long nap!

Nap #2
We put Kyle and Emily down to take a nap when they started acting like they were tired. There was a whole lot of fussing and after about 45 minutes, we gave up on the nap and let Kyle and Emily out of their crib and monkeys (sleep sacks) to play.

Bed Time
Both babies were very sleepy! We did our normal bedtime routine, but couldn't get either of them to eat much of their bottles. We put them to bed and let them almost fall asleep. Brent went in and fed them their bottles after they had settled down and they ate most of their bottles and were out.

Kyle did wake up a little bit ago, and I cuddled with him again for a couple minutes and he went right back to sleep.

Bye Bye Pacifiers Day #3

The babies slept until a little after 7:00am this morning!

They woke up, Brent fed them, and they went right back to sleep for another 2 hrs!

Nap #1
Both Emily and Kyle were asleep shortly after we put them down for their nap!

Nap #2
Emily, Kyle and I went to visit Brent at work. It was right about nap time when we left his work, and they both fell asleep in the car. When we got home, I tried putting them right to bed so they continue their nap. They fussed for a while, I gave them a little bit of milk, and they calmed down for a little bit until Brent got home. He tried to feed them more because they were kind of acting like they were hungry, but they wouldn't eat. He took them out of the crib and put them in their swings. They calmed down, but showed no interest in sleeping. So we gave up on getting more of a nap.

Nap #3
Both Kyle and Emily were so tried from not having their normal afternoon nap! Emily went right to sleep. Kyle played with Mr. E (his blanket with an Elephant on it) for a little bit, and then fell asleep.

Bedtime
Kyle and Emily both feel sleep within five minutes of being put in their crib. Kyle woke up at one point before it was time for their 11:00pm bottle... I cuddled with him for a couple minutes and he fell back asleep.

Computer Update

It's officially dead...

I won't be posting any pictures for a while... sorry :(

Bye Bye Pacifiers Day #2

This morning that babies woke up about 4:30am... and after a couple attempts to get them to go back to sleep, Brent caved in and gave them their pacifiers... and they went back to sleep.

Nap #1
Kyle and Emily both went to sleep fairly quickly after they were laid in their crib.
They both even woke up about 45 minutes into their nap and went back to sleep without me having to go in and help them.

Nap #2
Kyle feel sleep within five minutes of being laid down.
It took Emily about 20 minutes to fall asleep, but she just laid there quietly until she fell asleep. I thought she was sleeping, but she still had her eyes open when I checked on her about 15 minutes after I laid them down. Then when I went back in 5 minutes later, she was out!

Bedtime
Both Emily and Kyle were out within minutes of being put to bed!

Kyle's Helmet

The little dude is back in his helmet. They shaved down some of the foam where it was rubbing! He seemed disappointed at first that it was back on but very quickly forgot about it!

Day #1 Without Pacifiers

Brent and I decided that once Emily and Kyle turned six months old that their pacifiers were going bye bye!

Nap #1
Kyle fussed a little bit and played for a little bit, but was asleep within ten minutes from when I laid them down.
Emily talked and whined and played with Lilly for about twenty minutes, and then it took her another ten minutes or so before she actually fell asleep.

Nap #2
Kyle was asleep within five minutes from when I laid him down.
Emily whined for about fifteen minutes and then talked for another five minutes or so. I checked on then about twenty five minutes after I laid them down, and they were both out!

Bed Time
Kyle fell right alseep!
Emily was asleep within five minutes!
